pharmachologic effect

It inhibits isoleucine-transfer-RNA synthetase, which leads to the cessation of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell. Due to the specific mechanism of action and the unique chemical structure, mupirocin does not show cross-resistance with other antibiotics (if used correctly, the risk of resistant strains is small).

In minimal inhibitory concentrations it has bacteriostatic, and in higher concentrations - bactericidal properties. Spectrum of antibacterial activity in vitro :
- gram-positive aerobes: Staphylococcus aureus (including strains resistant to methicillin and producing beta-lactamases), Staphylococcus epidermidis and other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. ,
- gram-negative anaerobes: Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Branhamella catarrhalis, Pasteurella multocida, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter freundii, Bordetella pertussis,
- insensitive: Corynebacterium spp., species of the family Enterobacteriaceaegram-negative non-fermentative sticks, Micrococcus, anaerobes.

Indications of the drug Bactroban ®

Intranasal ointment: carriage of staphylococci (including strains Staphylococcus aureus polyresistant and resistant to methicillin).

Dermatological ointment: treatment of primary infections of the skin - impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis (including boils of the external auditory canal and auricle), ecthyma, secondary infections of the skin - infected eczema, infected injuries (abrasions, insect bites), minor ( not requiring hospitalization) wounds and burns, prevention of wound infection after small cuts, wounds and minor abrasions.

Dosage and administration

Intranasally, externally. Intranasal ointment: applied to the inner surface of the nostrils 2-3 times a day for 5-7 days.

Ointment for external use: adults, children and elderly patients apply a small amount to the affected area of the skin 2-3 times a day, apply an aseptic dressing if necessary, the course of treatment is up to 10 days.

In liver failure, a standard dosage is used.
Renal failure - see "Precautions".

You can not combine Bactroban ointment with other drugs because of the risk of dilution, a decrease in antibacterial activity and stability.

Precautionary measures

Ointment 2% external can not be used to treat eye diseases, intranasally, in the field of drainage.
Avoid contact with ointment in the eyes. In case of contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water until the remnants of the ointment are completely removed.

Application for renal failure: in elderly patients there are no restrictions for use, except when during treatment there are conditions for the absorption of polyethylene glycol, which is part of the ointment, and signs of moderate and severe renal failure. Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed through the wound surface or other damage to the skin and excreted through the kidneys. Dermatological ointment (based on polyethylene glycol) can not be used in conditions accompanied by increased absorption of polyethylene glycol, and especially with moderate or severe renal failure.

In rare cases of allergic reactions or significant irritation of the skin, treatment should be discontinued, rinse the affected area with water to remove ointment residues and prescribe alternative anti-infection therapy.

Bactroban has practically no side effects

12 clinical trials are dedicated to the negative reactions of Bactroban. In all of them, the incidence of side effects was less than 0.1%. The only negative effect on the human body when using Bactroban was the development of allergic reactions from the skin (rash, itching) or mucous membrane (burning, dryness), which were extremely rare.

This reaction was due to individual intolerance to mupirocin or auxiliary components. The drug can be called hypoallergenic and recommended for people suffering from allergic diseases (hay fever, atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma).

Instructions for use nasal ointment Bactroban

Bactroban is used only in the area of the nasal mucosa. To achieve a good bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect, the following simple steps should be performed:

  1. Clean nose by blowing.
  2. Apply 30 milligrams of ointment (volume equal to the size of the match head) on the mucosa of each nasal passage.
  3. Firmly press the nasal passages to the septum to properly distribute the ointment on the surface of the nasal mucosa.

The procedure must be performed twice a day. The course of therapy averages from 3 to 5 days. The drug can not be used for more than 10 days without assessing the change in condition.

You can not add other drugs to the ointment for intranasal use or apply it immediately after applying other drugs in the nose, as this can reduce the antibacterial activity.

Why should you not use Bactroban for prevention?

In the instructions for Bactroban, in the indications for use, prophylaxis of nasal diseases is not indicated, therefore, it is impossible to use it independently for preventive purposes. The prophylactic use of Bactroban in a hospital setting can be prescribed by a doctor to reduce the risk of developing hospital infections in patients. It is strictly forbidden to independently take such measures at home.

The most common reason for the development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is the irrational and inadequate use of the latter. Infectious agents begin to get used to the constant concentration of antimicrobial agents and change their structure, becoming insensitive to it.

Frequent use of Bactroban unnecessarily, as well as self-exceeding the course of treatment without the advice of a doctor, can lead to the development of an infection that will have to be treated not with local antibacterial ointments, but with oral or intravenous antibiotics.

The rational use of Bactroban in short courses does not cause the development of bacterial resistance. In the absence of effects from use, treatment should be stopped and consult a specialist.

Indications for use of Bactroban

From the instructions to Bactroban it is known that the drug is prescribed for the treatment of diseases of infectious etiology in soft tissues and skin, as well as for the treatment of furunculosis, folliculitis, infections of the nasal cavity, impetigo.

Also used to treat secondary skin infections, such as infected injuries due to abrasions and insect bites, minor burns and wounds. As a prevention of infection, the drug is indicated for small cuts, small abrasions and wounds.

Bactroban ointment is used externally as part of complex therapy and monotherapy, however, provided that no other agents are applied at the same time. In any case, a minimum interval of 30 minutes should be followed.

Bactroban nasal is undesirable to mix with other drugs, since the therapeutic effect of the drug is significantly reduced.

Dosage and administration of Bactroban

The drug in the form of a cream must be applied with a cotton wool or tampon to the affected area of the skin, previously cleaned of impurities. During the day, the procedure must be repeated up to 3 times. A sterile dressing can be applied over the affected skin treated with the product. The duration of treatment with Bactroban is determined by the doctor individually, but the recommended duration of use of the drug is 1-1.5 weeks. After applying the product, you need to wash your hands well and prevent the cream from getting into your eyes.

Persons suffering from impaired renal function, the dose of Bactroban is not adjusted.

When treating with Bactroban cream, you need to know that if the integrity of the skin is violated, the systemic absorption of the drug increases.

Bactroban ointment should be applied in a thin layer to a clean area of the skin from 1 to 3 times per day, while the use of a dressing is allowed. Contact with the eyes should also be avoided. The course of treatment lasts up to 10 days.

Bactroban nasal in the form of ointment is placed in a small amount in each nostril twice a day. The course of treatment is five days. After applying the ointment to the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, it is recommended to close the nose with your fingers, squeeze a little and press several times on the wings from both sides, gently massaging. This will help achieve maximum distribution of the product on the surface of the skin. After a few days of using Bactroban, the infection will begin to leave the nasal cavity.

Side effects of Bactroban

In general, the drug is not well tolerated, but among the recorded cases of adverse reactions, symptoms such as erythema, eczema, dry skin, itching and burning, urticaria, and redness were identified.

Nausea, epigastric pain, secondary infection of wounds, headaches, ulcerative stomatitis and systemic allergic manifestations are extremely rare.

special instructions

Bactroban is used cautiously by elderly patients and those who have impaired renal function, especially if treatment of a large area of the affected skin or area with a violation of the integrity of the cover is required.

During pregnancy and lactation, the use of this drug is allowed, but only in individual cases and as directed by a doctor, for example, if there are cracks in the nipples. Before feeding the baby, it is necessary to carefully wash off the remains of Bactroban from the chest and skin around.

The drug in the form of a nasal ointment is prescribed mainly for children over the age of 12 years. The effect of the drug on a younger age category has not been studied to date. Also, the possible risks of treatment with a nasal preparation for pregnant women are unknown. However, the drug is not excreted in breast milk, which allows its use in lactation.

Bactroban nasal does not affect the ability to work with complex mechanisms or transport management.

Why is it useless to look for analogues of Bactroban?

Like most unique modern drugs, Bactroban nasal ointment has no analogues. But there is an ointment with the same name, also containing mupirocin, used to treat skin diseases (eczema, pyoderma, psoriasis and others).

When purchasing Bactroban in a pharmacy, be sure to specify which particular ointment you need. In addition to the described nasal form, there is Bactroban ointment for use on the surface of the skin. Despite the fact that in its composition it also contains mupirocin in 2% concentration, it is not suitable for use on the nasal mucosa due to the content of other excipients.

Analyzing the ointments for intranasal use presented on the pharmaceutical market, you can find that there are not so many of them. All nasal ointments can be divided into three groups:

  • antibacterial (Bactroban),
  • vegetable (Pinosol, Doctor Theiss, Evamenol),
  • antiviral (Oxolinic ointment, Grippferon),

Surprisingly, Baktoroban is the only ointment for intranasal use, which in its composition contains an antibiotic that can destroy pathogenic bacteria. All other intranasal ointments can be used in the complex treatment of nasal diseases, as well as for prevention during an unfavorable epidemiological situation.

Bactroban is for local / external use only.

Absorption of mupirocin in the form of a nasal ointment through a healthy and damaged nasal mucosa is negligible (up to 1% of the dose is excreted in the form of monic acid in the urine).

Mupirocin in the form of an ointment for external use through intact human skin is poorly absorbed. Absorbed through damaged skin, the substance is rapidly metabolized to inactive monic acid, after which it is rapidly excreted by the kidneys.

Nasal ointment

  • carriage in the nasal cavity of staphylococcal infection, including carriage of Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains),
  • infection of Staphylococcus aureus in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis (prevention).

Ointment for external use

  • primary skin infections: ecthyma, furunculosis (including furuncles of the auricle and external auditory meatus), folliculitis, impetigo (treatment),
  • secondary skin infections: infected eczema, injuries (abrasions, insect bites), minor burns and wounds that do not require hospitalization (treatment),
  • bacterial infections with minor cuts, wounds, abrasions and other uncontaminated skin lesions (prevention).

  • age up to 12 years (nasal ointment),
  • lactation, in the case of an ointment for external use in order to prevent bacterial infection of nipple cracks,
  • individual intolerance to the components of the drug, including a burdened history.

Relative (Bactroban is prescribed under medical supervision):

  • moderate to severe renal failure (ointment for external use),
  • advanced age (ointment for external use),
  • pregnancy and lactation.

Instructions for use of Bactroban: method and dosage

Ointment for external use is applied with a thin layer on the cleaned affected area of the skin 1-3 times a day, after which you can apply a bandage. The duration of the course of treatment is from 7 to 10 days.

Bactroban nasal ointment in a small amount is placed in each nostril 2 times a day. After laying the ointment intranasally, for its better distribution, it is necessary to close the nose with your fingers well and press the nasal passages several times on both sides. The recommended course of treatment is 5 days.

Pregnancy and lactation

According to the instructions, Bactroban during pregnancy / lactation can only be used after the doctor assesses the ratio of the expected benefit to the possible risk (the safety profile has not been studied). When conducting animal studies, signs of reproductive toxicity were not detected.

In the case of the use of external Bactroban ointment in order to prevent bacterial infection of nipple cracks, breastfeeding should be interrupted.

Reviews about Bactroban

In most cases, patients leave positive feedback about Bactroban. They note the high effectiveness of both nasal ointment for the treatment of staphylococcal infection in the nasal cavity and ointment for external use in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including furunculosis, burns, insect bites, etc. Adverse reactions are reported infrequently. Many estimate the cost of the drug as high.

The price of Bactroban in pharmacies
