How to optimize and speed up Windows 7? Tired of the long loading of the system and its slow operation

Send> Windows> Seven> 10 useful tips on how to speed up Windows 7

Without a doubt Windows 7 is a much better operating system than previous versions Windowsbut that doesn’t mean that it works faster. Those who still use their old computer, due to the hardware requirements of the system, cannot get the same performance as in Windows XP. There are many more factors that can significantly slow down performance. In this article, we are going to show you some useful ways to increase the speed and productivity of Windows 7.

1. Turn off unnecessary visual effects

  • Right-click on “My Computer” in the Windows Start menu and select “Properties”.
  • Click on the "Advanced System Settings" button in the left pane.
  • In the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section. Select "Special:".
  • View the list and uncheck the effects that you are not using. (Note: For best results, clear all check boxes except the last four items). Click OK.
  • Restart your computer

2. Increase download speed

With this little tweak, you can reduce the boot time of your Windows 7 OS.

  • Press Windows Key + R to launch the Run window.
  • Type "msconfig" and press Enter. The system setup window will appear.
  • In the “Boot” tab, you will see (on the right side) “Time out”. It is usually set to 30.
  • If you use only one operating system, then you can set the value to 0. But if you use more than one, set the value to 3.
  • Check the “No GUI Boot” option.

  • Click the “Advanced Options” button
  • Check the “Number of Processor” box and select the number of processors in the computer.

  • Now click the "OK" button.
  • Click the “Apply” button and then “OK” again.

3. Disabling Windows Aero Theme

Windows Aero Theme is a combination of lightweight translucent windows with powerful graphics capabilities in Windows Vista / 7. Although its performance has been significantly improved in Windows 7 compared to Vista, this effect still takes up a lot of RAM and places high demands on the video card. If you can live without Windows Aero Theme, then use the following tip and turn it off.

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Personalization".
  • Select one of the standard themes on the right side, for example, "Windows 7 Basic."

4. Remove unnecessary items from the startup menu

Some of the applications that you installed are automatically added to startup without your knowledge. If your Windows starts up for a long time, one of the reasons may be these applications. The best way to fix this is to remove unwanted programs from autorun.

  • Press Windows Key + R and type “msconfig” in the Run dialog box.
  • Click on the “Startup” tab. Uncheck the boxes for apps you don’t use. (Make sure you do not disable system services).

5. Use your USB flash drive as RAM

AT Windows 7 There is a very useful feature that allows you to use a USB flash drive as external RAM.

Before you begin, make sure that you are using a just formatted USB drive.

  • Plug in USB. Right-click on the USB drive in the "My Computer" window and select "Properties."
  • In the “Ready Boost” section, check the “Use this device” box.
  • Set the disk space of your USB flash drive that you want to allocate to increase the speed of the system.

6. Turn off unnecessary system sounds

When they are active, the sound system can take up a lot of system resources and slows down the computer.

  • Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type "mmsys.cpl" and press Enter.
  • Click on the Sound tab. In the sound scheme, select "No Sounds" from the drop-down list.

7. Disabling Search Indexing in Windows 7

Most users Windows 7 Do not use search in the system. But the search indexing service will still index and track files so that files can be quickly found. This feature is only useful if you frequently use search on your system. She unconsciously eats up system resources, so we recommend that you disable this component indexing feature.

8. Disable Windows 7 S> Disabling Windows 7 Sidebar will certainly help you get a few seconds during startup. There are many useful utilities, such as RocketDock, etc., for configuring system startup.

Right-clicking on the sidebar (S> User Account Control (UAC) function in Windows 7 is very annoying, although it is assumed that it can protect your computer from malware and virus activity. But if you use your computer every day, this function will bring some inconvenience to you We have written in detail about how to disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows 7.

10. Disk Defragmenter

Defragmentation helps to improve access time for each file by managing free space and organizing the location of files on disks. It is recommended to run defragmentation very often, especially if you have a large amount of data, after deleting unnecessary files, cleaning the disk, etc.

  • Go to "My Computer", right-click on the desired drive and select "Properties"
  • In the dialog box that opens, open the Service tab
  • In the Disk Defragmenter section, click the Run Defragment button
  • Defragmenting will take some time, depending on the size of the partitions and data.

9 steps to eliminate brakes and speed up Windows 7

Description of the problem:

As I said above, over time, as programs are installed, some of them register themselves in Windows startup and start each time the computer is turned on. Everything would be fine, but some of these programs are quite demanding on resources and affect the PC boot speed, sometimes significantly.

I want to pay special attention to uTorrent. If you have a lot of torrents distributed and the program is in startup, then Windows can load for tens of seconds longer!

Logical and simple - you need to open the autoload settings and remove from it everything unnecessary and unnecessary to you. In general, in my opinion, in startup you only need the programs that you use absolutely every time you turn on the computer.

To view startup in Windows 7 - press the key combination WIN + R, then type the command msconfig and press Enter (example below).

System Configuration - msconfig

Next, open the "Startup" tab and uncheck the boxes next to those applications that you do not need to constantly work.

System Configuration - Startup

By the way, special utilities can help check Windows startup and remove unnecessary programs from the computer. One of these is CCleaner (example in the screenshot below). Quite convenient: to view the startup list in CCleaner, just open the menu "Service / Startup" .

CCleaner: Service - Startup

Description of the problem:

By default, Windows includes a lot of services that take up RAM and somehow affect performance (I must say that disabling "extra" services is especially noticeable on low-power PCs with a small amount of RAM). For example, if you don’t have fax - why do you need this working service, or print manager - if there is no printer?

The optimization in this step is to disable the services that are not needed on your PC. To disable a service, you must open a list of them. To do this, press the key combination WIN + R enter services.msc click Ok .

How to open the list of services in Windows 7 // services.msc

Then select a service from the list: its description appears on the left. To disable the service, open it by double-clicking the left mouse button (in my example, I selected Update centre ).

Then in the "Startup Type" column, select "Disabled", and then click the "Stop" button. Thus, you stop the service and it will not start anymore.

How to stop and disable the service

Important! Do not disable all services in a row, some of them are necessary for the normal operation of the system. In any case, before making changes - read the description of the service, whether the meaning is clear. In general, create a control point (backup) - if suddenly, calmly roll back.

What services can be disabled in Windows 7:

  • Windows CardSpace,
  • Windows Search
  • Offline files
  • Network Access Protection Agent
  • Adaptive brightness control,
  • Windows Backup
  • IP Helper Service
  • Secondary login
  • Grouping network members,
  • Remote Access Connection Manager,
  • Remote Access Connection Manager (if there is no VPN),
  • Network Participant Identity Manager
  • Performance logs and alerts,
  • Secure storage
  • Configure Remote Desktop Server
  • Smart card deletion policy,
  • Shadow Copy Software Provider (Microsoft),
  • Home Party Listener
  • Windows Event Collector
  • Network login
  • Tablet PC Input Service,
  • Windows Image Download Service (WIA) (if there is no scanner or camera),
  • Windows Media Center Scheduler Service,
  • Smart card
  • Shadow copy volume
  • Diagnostic system unit
  • Diagnostic Service Node
  • Fax,
  • Performance counter library host,
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update (I recommend turning it off for a while. And the update should be done manually, because in auto mode this service often creates a high load, which slows down the PC).

Description of the problem:

No matter how carefully you use your Windows, anyway, over time, a large amount of garbage accumulates in it: old tails in the registry from long-deleted programs, temporary files remaining when installing any software, browser cache, etc. All these files, as they accumulate, begin to affect the performance of the system as a whole.

Sometimes, the user of such "garbage" accumulates several tens of gigabytes!

A couple of times a month it is recommended to clean your Windows from such "garbage". This can be done both with the help of a standard cleaner in Windows, and with the help of third-party utilities (I recommend the second option).

In order not to repeat here and not to describe how and what, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with my instructions (the link is given below).

Description of the problem:

Windows 7, in comparison with Windows XP, has become more beautiful: effects, shadows, Aero, etc. But all this affects the speed of the computer (very noticeable on weak machines).

The same problem can be attributed to gadgets (small windows on the desktop that can inform you about the weather, exchange rates, etc.). They appeared just in Windows 7 - and everyone began to actively use them. Meanwhile, they are quite demanding on the system.

As for the gadgets, it’s enough to close them and they will disappear from the desktop (stop consuming your resources). It is also convenient to recognize the same weather and the exchange rate in the browser.

As for visual effects, to configure them, open the Windows Control Panel at: Control Panel System and Security System.

Next on the left click the link "Advanced system settings".

Additional system parameters

In the "Advanced" tab, open the performance options (see screen below).

In the tab "Visual effects" uncheck the effects that you do not need. For maximum system acceleration - set the slider to the "Ensure the best performance" position. Next, save the settings.

Provide the best performance.

Appearance can be a little spoiled, but the system will become much more responsive.

Description of the problem:

Driver - Discord for driver! A lot depends on the driver version. For example, those drivers that are installed on a system with Windows do not always work optimally (for example, a network card may not work for all its capabilities (with reduced speed), a driver for a video card cannot be configured at all, etc.).

In addition, the drivers for part of the equipment may not be installed at all in your system (as in the screenshot below). By the way, to look at what equipment there is no driver - open device Manager (Win + R key combination, then enter devmgmt.msc command).

There are no drivers for: video card, network controller, Ethernet controller, etc.

  1. The best option: download the driver from the website of the manufacturer of your computer / laptop. You can also use the driver disk that came with the PC when you purchased (if you saved ☺). If you do not know your equipment, you can use utilities to determine the characteristics of your PC.
  2. You can use programs to automatically update drivers. I have several articles dedicated to them on my site, one of the links in front of you.
  3. If possible: I recommend checking several versions of drivers at once (especially on a video card). It often happens that an older driver works better than a new one.

Description of the problem:

This problem is typical for laptops, netbooks and other compact gadgets that run on battery power. The fact is that there are several operating modes: economical (when at the expense of performance, the laptop saves energy for longer battery life), ordinary, and high performance. And by default, most often it is ordinary (balanced), or economical.

To begin, I recommend opening the control panel at: Control Panel Hardware and Sound Power Options .

Next you should see some power plans. Set balanced mode or high performance mode.

Choosing a Power Plan // Windows 7

For detailed power settings: first click on the link "Configuring the power plan" (opposite the selected power mode), then at the bottom of the screen open the link "Change advanced power settings". Next, you can expand the desired tabs and configure each parameter individually.

For example, you often need to configure the hard drive (prevent it from stopping), or adjust the brightness of the monitor (remove adaptability), etc.

Detailed power settings

In addition, power parameters can be set in special utilities. For example, these are found on Sony, Acer, Lenovo, etc. laptops. As a rule, you can open their settings through the assistant in the tray, next to the clock (screen below). If there is nothing like this in the tray, check the Windows Control Panel.

Lenovo Power Manager

Description of the problem:

By default, Windows 7 includes indexing the contents of files for faster searches (for example, enter a phrase from a text file, and Windows finds it on your disk. Convenient!). But I noticed that 10% of users use this function on their strength. So if you do not need it, but eats decent resources of the disk subsystem, maybe it should be turned off? ☺

To do this, go to "My Computer", select the drive and open its properties.

Next, in the "General" tab, uncheck "Allow indexing the contents of files on this drive in addition to file properties." Click OK, now indexing should be disabled.

Description of the problem:

Defragmentation is the process of redistributing files on a disk so that they are located in contiguous areas (so that they can be read faster from the disk). If you regularly defragment your hard disk (HDD), then the speed of reading and writing files will be slightly higher (especially the FAT 32 file system is subject to fragmentation). You can find out more about defragmentation on Wikipedia.

By the way, if you have an SSD-drive - you can not read what is written below, this type of drive does not need defragmentation.

Run the built-in disk defragmenter in Windows 7. To do this, just open "My Computer", open the properties desired drive. Then open the “Service” tab and click on the “Defragment.” Button. Next, the system will analyze the disk for the need to defragment it.

  • An even better option is to install a special defragmentation utility. You can learn about them in one of my previous articles.

    Description of the problem:

For some reason, many users do not use sleep, hibernation, etc., varieties of the transfer of a computer / laptop to low power mode. They turn off the computer completely even when they are going to turn it on again after an hour or two.

Meanwhile, the sleep mode allows you to quickly restore your work, literally in 1-2 seconds. Thanks to this, you can save a fraction of the time.

It is enough to press the START button, then select "Sleep" from the options for completing the work (as in the screenshot below). If you do not have such an option - most likely a problem with the drivers (I wrote about this above).

    Putting your computer to sleep

Note: в настройках электропитания в панели управления Windows можно настроить через какое время переводить компьютер в режим сна (пример ниже).
