Very often, the question arises before the owners of the estate: what to do if the lawn in the garden for one reason or another loses its former attractiveness, turning at the same time, to put it mildly, into a second-class lawn. What is meant by this concept?

First of all, it's about changing grass colors. Yellow spots may appear on the lawn. , both small and large sizes, spots can merge into a single large spot, which over time can increase, forming at the same time whole glades.

You can also often see another picture: in some shady places, the grass is covered with brown algae and mushrooms, this indicates that this area is excessively watered and does not have time to dry well.

Grass in such a place is constantly warming up, it just dies, leaving behind empty, damp places. A second-class lawn is primarily the result of its illnesses, inadequate care, drought or excessive watering.

But there is another important point, which many homeowners do not even suspect is the urine of their pets - cats and dogs. If animals have access to the garden and freedom of movement, then yellow spots on the lawn simply can not be avoided. Urine burns grass on the lawn, conifers and evergreens. Sometimes, carefully studying the situation in the garden, you can accurately determine the growth of the pet and even its gender.

Today we will try to tell you how quickly, easily and with minimal cost to replace the lawn.

For this it is necessary stock up construction bags, sharp shovels, rakes, coarse river sand and neutral peat for the lawn. Start work in dry, sunny weather, and do not water the lawn a couple of days before. All these conditions will greatly facilitate the work performed in the physical sense.

With a sharp shovel, pressing it almost to the ground, start trim top layer turf. If the soil is dry, then it will be easy enough to do, while the roots of the old grass will be removed along with the turf.

Do this all over the site, and carefully shake, because they may still have soil and sand. Fold the removed sod in construction bags and take it out of the area.

Replacing the old lawn with a new one is best done in small areas. This is a rather time-consuming process, it involves labor and transport. As a result, this method is more expensive, but in many cases it is the only true one.

We clean and align pad.

If after the previous lawn a certain amount of sand remains in the soil - this is very good, which means that when laying a new lawn, less sand can be added.

Start to produce deep diggingcarefully breaking breasts of earth.

After digging, it is necessary to finally break the breasts with a garden rake, and level the soil.

Sprinkle peat over the entire surface of the earth with a layer of about 10-15 cm. Unforgettable about sand, if the soil is heavy and clay, then 10 kg is enough to make 1 square meter.

Making peat and sand and leveling them, we do second digging.

Finally the soil is considered prepared for sowing or laying a rolled lawn in that casewhen it is dug up, leveled and slightly tamped.

Remember, at that moment when you decided to change the old lawn to a new one, you need to get rid of the old problems that were on your site and caused the cause of the lawn disease.

Perhaps necessary update watering and add some zones, or vice versa - to dry wet areas.

Timely mowing and watering, proper fertilizer application, constant care will make your lawn especially thick and beautiful, which means they will return a good mood.

How to clean an old lawn sown in open ground

There are two options for arranging a green lawn - sowing grass mixtures in open ground and rolled lawns. The sowing lawn is more popular among summer residents and many country residents. It is more durable, requires less attention, since it feeds on moisture from the deep layers of the soil, but it is much more difficult to remove such a lawn than a rolled lawn. After all, the roots of grass mixtures penetrate deep into the soil layers and form a strong strong turf, saturated with soil and moisture.

To clean the old lawn, you have to work hard. Below we describe three common ways to remove the old lawn from the site.

When asked how to remove a lawn sown in open ground, the first thing that comes to mind is to cut the lawn sod using sharp garden tools. This can be a bayonet spade, a shovel with a pointed edge or a cultivator.

  • The first step is to undermine the edge of the lawn closest to the curb or other obstruction.
  • Then we drive a sharp shovel to a depth of 10-15 cm.
  • We translate the shovel into a horizontal position, making as if cutting movements.

  • For convenience, this procedure can be performed together: one person pushes a shovel from himself, the second pulls the handle on himself, holding on to a thick rope tied near the turn of the shovel.
  • Having thus cut off part of the lawn, the entire turf must be packed in sealed bags and taken out of the area.

Important! If you leave the turf of lawn grass on the site, there is a chance of sprouting old seeds, which are probably preserved in the turf.

Sod can be taken out into the forest, planted and poured out, but also a wonderful compost can be made from it. To do this, cut the sod along with the soil must be poured into a compost pit or pile. To accelerate the conversion of plant residues into humus, you can process a bunch of biological products.

The area that remains after cutting and removing the old turf is obtained below the old level by 10 - 12 cm. To restore the former height, fresh soil or black soil must be poured on top. Above you can plant a new lawn or use the site for other purposes.

Site treatment with biological products

It is not always possible to completely remove the sod from the site, and it is not always necessary. Therefore, there is another way to remove the old lawn, combining the mechanical method and the use of biological products.

  • you can remove the sod in exactly the same way as described above. Using a sharp bayonet shovel, a layer of 10-15 cm is cut. In this case, the surface of the soil remains flat. Cut turf can not be removed from the site, but simply turn upside down.
  • Then we pour water on top of the sod with a solution of biological products that accelerate the decomposition of organic residues. For example, Baikal 1, Emochki, EM-1 and other drugs with microorganisms. This procedure can be performed in the warm season, when the air temperature rises above +16 ° C.
  • With a solution of biological products, you can spray the sod, pouring the solution into a garden sprayer. So fine droplets will cover the maximum area of organic matter. Or you can just water the turf from a watering can.
  • After treating the turf, it is advisable to cover it with mulch. It may be a black film, it is easier to remove from the site.

Important! Remember that for better processing of organics by microorganisms, the soil must be moist. Direct sunlight is also undesirable, and for this, mulch is needed.

  • After just a week, you can already sow new lawn grass. After removing the mulching material, loose humus remains underneath. This means that microorganisms have successfully processed organics.

Please note that biological products with microorganisms process any damaged organics. For example, cut sap, shovel. No matter how hard you try, small roots of grass will remain in the depths of the soil. Biological products successfully process residual roots in the soil and cut turf, leaving only nutritious humus. At the same time, mind you, without harming either the soil or the environment, as herbicides do. The fact is that the composition of biological preparations includes soil microorganisms, the main task of which in the natural habitat is the processing of organics into compounds accessible to plants. That is why the use of biological products on cut turf is the most organic and environmentally friendly way to remove the old lawn.

  • It will be much less labor-consuming to plow a plot of lawn with a cultivator.
  • Although the surface of the earth will not be smooth and even, as is the case with pruning sod, but this method requires less time and effort.

  • After the plot has been cultivated, it is shed with a biological solution in the same way as described in the first method.

It is advisable to cover the plot with mulch, and after a week you can plant a new lawn.

Important! Please note that processing organic matter into humus takes more than one week. But a week after treatment with biological products, you can safely sow the seeds, since they can no longer be decomposed.

Herbicides cause irreparable damage to soil inhabitants and other micro and macro organisms in your area. Moreover, they accumulate in the ground and then get to your table with food. Do not think that here I have a lawn, and there is a garden and between them as much as 15 m, herbicides will not bring harm to the crop. You are mistaken, the remains of herbicides and the products of their decomposition can travel in your area along with rain and groundwater.

Nevertheless, many are not afraid of any persuasion, and they continue to use herbicides to destroy green spaces. Well, we will tell them the technology of using these substances on the site.

Firstly, treatment with herbicides must be carried out in protective equipment: in a respirator and gloves. In the process of processing the site, it is necessary to ensure that the drug does not fall on exposed areas of the skin. After treatment, you must take a shower.

Skin contact with the herbicides can cause burns, poisoning and allergic reactions.

Herbicides are sold in liquid and dry powder form. They also differ in the type of exposure:

  • Non-selective (continuous action). These herbicides are not able to distinguish between different types of plants and destroy absolutely everything in a row. They can be used only after harvesting. Because no matter how you try, and drops of the drug during processing will scatter throughout the site.
  • Selective (selective action). Herbicides of this type are able to destroy only certain types of plants. Such drugs can be used throughout the season to kill weeds.

Also, herbicides differ in the method of exposure:

  • Contact action. Drops of the drug fall on the leaves and stem of the plant, it dries and dies. In this way, annual plants can be removed.
  • Continuous action or systemic herbicides. After the drug enters the plants, it is absorbed into the structure, not only the aboveground part (leaves and stem) dies, but also the roots. Such drugs can be used to eliminate perennials.

So, to remove the old lawn, it is necessary to treat the entire area of the lawn with a universal systemic herbicide. If it is a powder, then it must be scattered evenly over the entire area, according to the instructions.

After treatment with herbicides, the area must be covered with a plastic film in order to improve the reaction of the interaction of the drug and grass. It is better to clean the old lawn with the help of herbicides on hot summer days, when direct sunlight can burn grass through the film.

Sowing a new lawn is possible not earlier than in a month, but better for the next season.

But how to do that?

For large areas, you can, of course, start up a bulldozer, or a cultivator and deal with the end, but this method is absolutely not suitable for a home lawn. You can remove the old lawn with a trench tool such as a shovel, or herbicides. A rolled lawn in which the grass roots did not penetrate too deeply is mechanically easier to remove, although a seeded lawn requires less care during growth. With the help of a shovel, and even if you call several assistants, things will go faster. Having dressed in old clothes and gloves, sharpened well with a shovel, prepared for the appearance of heavy dust, a lot of debris and dirt, you can start this difficult, but very cheap operation. Of course, you need to prepare garbage bags so as not to contaminate the cleaned area.

Carefully cutting strips of old turf, with a depth of about 10-15 centimeters, pry it with a sharp shovel. Well, if this work is carried out together, one holds and directs the shovel, the other, with the help of a rope tied at the very bottom, its handle pulls itself strongly. The old turf in this case is folded and you can put it in a bag, so that you can later remove it to a landfill. If the turf is not contaminated with industrial waste, it can be carried to the nearest forest. Of course, this turf can also be put on compost, if you have space for the compost heap. The composting process is accelerated if you use special biological products, such as EM-1, Baikal, Emochka. To improve the performance of the preparations, the surface of the compost heap should be covered with a black film or mulching material. The film is laid to protect soil microbes that do not like bright sunlight. In the same way, turf can be processed on the site, not removing it, but only turning it upside down.

This is the most environmentally friendly way to prepare a site for a new lawn, since it does not harm the soil with all kinds of herbicides. Biological products include soil microorganisms that are already in the soil, but the use of such drugs accelerates the natural process of decomposition of organic residues. When using biological products in many cases, the treatment of the site with herbicides is not required. The use of the cultivator facilitates the work, it is only necessary to level the lumps that are formed during the cultivator, and then treat the soil with biological products, as described above.

After treatment with biological products, it is necessary to wait at least a week so that the newly sown seeds do not undergo decomposition. After harvesting the old turf, you need to add new black soil, trying to level the surface of the new lawn to the level of the old. If a new lawn grass is being laid in this place, care must be taken to ensure that the weed seeds that were dormant in the soil layer do not start to grow. Some seeds can lie for several decades before germinating. Herbicides are used to control weeds. Continuous herbicides destroy all the vegetation on the site. After them, nothing will grow, so new plantings are done only after these substances in the soil do not decompose into harmless components. To combat certain types of weeds, selective herbicides are used, which, for example, destroy only monocotyledonous plants (cereals), without harming other cultural plantings.

Herbicides of systemic or continuous action affect not only the stems and leaves, but also the root system of the plant, which leads to their death. Such herbicides are used mainly against perennials. Contact herbicides are good against annuals. Getting on their stem and leaves such a herbicide destroys the plant. Herbicides should be treated over the entire surface of the site. Untreated plots will serve as a depot for new seeds, pests and weeds. After processing the lawn, it is covered with a transparent plastic film or, better, non-woven covering material, under which in hot weather the processes of destruction of seeds and plant spores will develop more quickly. Of course, work with herbicides should be carried out in the absence of children, pets and all personal safety measures should be used, protecting the eyes, respiratory organs and skin from getting drugs.

Who will challenge the assertion that a neat emerald lawn is a true decoration of a garden plot. The lawn, as an element of a decorative garden, has a mass of undeniable advantages. It plays the role of an ideal canvas on which an intricate picture of the garden is painted with bright strokes. A well-kept ground lawn is indispensable in the front zone of the estate, where it serves as an expressive backdrop for decorative planting, sculptural groups or exquisite flower beds. The lawn is relevant for any principles of garden art. In a regular style plot, the lawn can act as a central element of symmetry, while in a landscape garden it combines different areas of the plot, visually linking them into a single whole.

The green carpet of the lawn is an excellent cure for overwork and fatigue, a universally recognized tool for solving recreational problems: organizing a recreation area, creating a convenient and safe cover for a sports ground. At the same time, the lawn has a beneficial effect on the microclimatic conditions of the garden: it significantly enriches the surface layer of air with oxygen, increases its humidity and helps to reduce the temperature in hot summer days.

Winter freezing, warming, wetting out, mole attacks, fungal diseases, but you never know how much misfortune falls on the lawn. The need for constant care: frequent mowing, periodic watering, regular fertilizing, combing, tilling, aeration, desperate weed control and many other necessary operations to maintain the quality of the lawn also significantly cloud the joy of owning a trimmed lawn. To the greatest extent this applies to areas of considerable area, where the exemplary content of the lawn turns into a burdensome duty. In those cases when the lawn settles down in forest areas, under a shady canopy of trees, one should be especially stubborn in the struggle for its survival.

What to do if there is not enough time, effort and money to care for the lawn, can it really be abandoned? In no case! The advantages of the lawn are so obvious that they outweigh all the difficulties that have to be overcome on the way to create a lawn and constantly experience while caring for it. However, even at the stage of designing the garden, you need to seriously think about where, how and how large you can afford to have a lawn. And how can it be replaced on the remaining area of the site.

It is not necessary to occupy the entire area of the site with a luxurious, but time-consuming and capricious parterre lawn. It will be quite appropriate in the ceremonial entry zone, and in other parts of the garden, in accordance with their functional affiliation, it can be replaced by a much easier garden lawn or even a meadow lawn, which is the best suited for a plot decided in a popular style. “Naturgarten”.

An irresistible impression is made by sections of a meadow lawn composed of turfs of spectacular types of cereals, harmoniously combined in height, color shades, texture of leaves and inflorescences, and other signs. To create such original fragments of prairies, species and varieties of reedweed, lightning, bukharnik, fescue, miscanthus, as well as ears of wheat (elymus) can be used. Occupying its peripheral parts, the variegated Moorish lawn with an abundance of bright wildflowers (poppies, daisies, flax, cornflowers, marigold, escholzia, daisies) remarkably fits into the natural garden, occupying its peripheral parts.

The listed lawn types require minimal maintenance. Mowing an ordinary meadow lawn will only have to be done several times per season, while Moorish will only mow once, at the end of summer, after the seeds of flowering annuals have ripened. The vast majority of grasses used to create lawns are highly demanding on light. Even the species that are most resistant to shading, such as the polegun and some varieties of red fescue, will not be able to grow in dense shade. Therefore, in those places of the site where the lighting is clearly insufficient (under the canopy of trees and shrubs, on the north side of the buildings), a grass layer of shade-tolerant plants should be formed. Depending on the design decisions, it can be either a dense, closed carpet of periwinkle, umbilicus, liverwort, tiarella, tenacity, hoofed grass, lily of the valley and many other ground cover species, or a more decorative shadow flower garden using a number of ornamental plants, such as ostrich and other ferns, anemones, incense, species and varieties of host, astilbe, geraniums. Shaded areas will look bright and attractive from the earliest spring, if directly in the flower garden or among the ground cover grasses planted curtains of bulbous and small-bulbous plants.

Ground cover application

What you need to know about weeds

Of course, there is no one hundred percent way to get rid of weeds on the lawn. But if you know the types of weeds and the features of their growth, you can correctly select the means of control. Therefore, we suggest starting with a review of some features of weeds and understanding why removal of weeds from the soil surface is so necessary.

Firstly, all weeds are divided into perennials and perennials. The second category poses a great danger: if weed control is not carried out on the lawn, this problem will remain next year, weed plants will spread even more over the plot, and the damage to the planted crops will be more serious. Secondly, weeds differ in the method of propagation.

Regardless of the characteristics of the spread, weeds have a fairly simple and quick process, so we recommend that you treat the weeds in a timely manner to prevent mass problems.

The spread of creeping weeds on the lawn poses a serious threat to soils, as they take nutrients and moisture from the soil. And, as you know, on weak soil it will be difficult to grow plants. That is why it is so important to find an effective method for removing weeds from the lawn.

To get started, it is better to familiarize yourself with the photos of weeds and the names of such plants: there are several ways to deal with different types of weeds. We will tell you about one of the best methods and explain which lawn grass displaces weeds in the process of their growth.

The role of the lawn on the site

The lawn is a perennial natural cover of cereal grass. Depending on the properties and characteristics of the application, shade-loving lawns are distinguished, as well as sports and performing a decorative function. Often they are used to prevent trampling, but you can immediately determine whether the lawn grass will clog the weeds - and solve two problems at once.

Attention! No less important features of lawn plants are air purification and the ability to muffle noise on the site.

It is important to understand that there is no universal way how to remove weeds on the site, because they adapt well to existing conditions. And even if you learn in advance how to get rid of weeds before planting a lawn, use herbicides for the lawn and other weed control products, this will not give you a guarantee of complete soil protection.

So how to destroy weeds on the lawn? This process will consist of several stages:

  • soil preparation, including its marking and cleaning of unnecessary vegetation,
  • soil treatment with protective agents,
  • fertilizing and rolling before planting lawn grass,
  • adding seeds and growing a lawn.

First, decide where exactly the borders of the lawn area will be located. To permanently clear the lawn of weeds in the desired area, make a marking and manually pull up the already established weeds from this surface. After a couple of weeks, repeat this procedure. Now you can level the terrain.

Attention! If you need to divide the area into straight flower beds, use pegs and twine to properly draw the boundaries.

Now you can begin to cultivate the soil. Decide how to treat the weed lawn and look at the reviews of weed control herbicides on the lawn to choose the most suitable remedies. Be sure to consider the type of weed for which such products are intended. As a rule, in the spring it is easier to use anti-weed remedies on the lawn, since weeds do not distribute seeds throughout the plot during this period (as opposed to autumn).

Since the vegetation on the site will turn yellow and die from chemical interference, remove all excess from the soil. After two weeks, walk over the surface again to remove any residues.

Tip: if you cover the area with geotextile material, the roots of the weeds that remain in the soil will be killed and the seeds will not grow out.

Now you need to take care of the composition of the soil. If the area has acidic soil, add lime or chalk to it. For heavy clay soil, use vermicompost or humus. After choosing a specific type of pushing weed of lawn grass, examine on the package what mineral fertilizers you need to apply to the soil. In spring, it is best to use nitrogen fertilizers, and in the fall season - potash and phosphorus.

After adding fertilizer, loosen the soil, level the soil and moisten. Now, using a massive skating rink, level the terrain, and after a week - remove the weeds that will germinate while the soil is resting.

To prepare for planting lawn grass, visually divide the site into identical sections - and immediately distribute the number of seeds equally for each. Water the dry soil using a hose with a shower head. When there is no wind, spread the seeds over the plot, scattering crosswise. Next, use a rake to give the soil looseness, and also use a roller to compact the seeds inside. Water the entire area again carefully.

It will be better if you scatter compost or straw over the cultivated area, and then water it about twice or thrice during the day.

Tip: do not pour a little seeds on each section, as empty places will be filled with weeds in the future, and you will have to re-carry out all of the above activities. But an excessive number of seeds of lawn grass, crowding out weeds, can lead to the fact that some of them will stop the development, freeze and die.

By the way, planting lawn grass that destroys weeds is best done in the period from May to September, since it is during this time that vegetation vegetation occurs. It is advisable to allocate autumn or spring for these works. But keep in mind that seedlings should appear before the onset of frost. On average, a month and a half passes between sowing and strengthening seedlings.

What lawn to plant so that weeds do not grow? It is necessary to select seeds in such a way that the mixture of herbs copes with the task as efficiently as possible. Of course, you should use only high-quality seeds, and their characteristics are easiest to guess at a cost. The higher the price of lawn grass, which destroys weeds, the better it takes root and sprouts faster.

Also focus on the production date: choose “new” seeds, since in this case the probability of germination of most of them is much higher. The price of grass weeding grass for an average is 3 to 15 thousand.

You should take care that you have enough seeds for seedlings throughout the territory. The seeding rate for one square of the terrain will be indicated on the packaging. Multiply it by the size of the plot - and you will get the right amount of seeds for growing.

If you follow our recommendations and follow the steps to create a lawn that clogs weeds, the first blade of grass will appear in a week. After the snow melts in early spring, continue top-dressing the soil and, if possible, sprinkle the remaining seeds to strengthen the system. Then by the summer the lawn will be fully formed, and you can not only enjoy the absence of weeds, but also spend time in the fresh air with maximum comfort.

Choose the right vegetation

Let's talk about how to sow the lawn so that there are no weeds. Such a weed control will be most effective if you select several varieties at once that will favorably move the neighborhood with each other.

Lawn grass that destroys weeds of the following varieties has the best reviews:

  • microclover related to unpretentious varieties
  • Polevoshnaya more demanding to care
  • Red fescue and meadow bluegrass that tolerate frosty periods.

Microclover is an example of lawn grass from weeds that can withstand high temperatures and drought, and can also grow even under direct sunlight. If you constantly water such grass, it will grow rapidly, so you will often have to cut the lawn.

In the absence of watering, microclover will behave quite naturally, but in order to maintain a bright green tint, you will have to feed the soil several times a month.

The shoot-bent field can grow up to fifteen centimeters in height and gradually takes root in the soil. It has a high growth rate and spread throughout the territory, if such a variety is provided with proper care. The polevole is adapted to different soils, but the best option for its cultivation is drained soil with fertilizers.

As for the red fescue, this grass grows best on fertile soil, periodically watered with water. It copes well with the destruction of the root system of neighboring vegetation and steadily withstands severe temperature drops, so it will continue for subsequent seasons.

Bluegrass meadow is suitable for areas with severe frosts. With the onset of spring, the seeds of this lawn grass will sprout out quite quickly.

If you decide to sow lawn grass instead of weeds, stop at plant varieties that do not require careful care every day. So it will be easier for you to provide the lawn with a well-groomed view for a long time. Learn how to remove weeds from the lawn and consult with seed sellers about which plants are best suited to your soil.

Mechanical way

When asked how to remove a lawn sown in open ground, the first thing that comes to mind is to cut the lawn sod using sharp garden tools. This can be a bayonet spade, a shovel with a pointed edge or a cultivator.

It is not always possible to completely remove the sod from the site, and it is not always necessary. Therefore, there is another way to remove the old lawn, combining the mechanical method and the use of biological products.

It is advisable to cover the plot with mulch, and after a week you can plant a new lawn.

Important!

Moreover, they accumulate in the ground and then get to your table with food. Do not think that here I have a lawn, and there is a garden and between them as much as 15 m, herbicides will not bring harm to the crop. Sowing a new lawn is possible not earlier than in a month, but better for the next season.

How to remove an old rolled lawn

A completely separate category of lawns is roll lawns. They represent a canvas of green grass, the basis for which is a dense sod - the interweaving of grass roots. It is spread on a flat prepared area. Sometimes under a rolled lawn they make a bed of crushed stone and sand, and a film or agrofiber is spread on top so that other plants can not sprout from the soil. This is the main difference between rolled lawns - their base is separated from the general soil, so it is easy to remove.

You can dismantle the lawn at any time of the year. For several years, which a rolled lawn lay on the site, its roots intertwined, forming a continuous canvas. There are no more clearly lined rolls; there is a continuous carpet of grass.

That is why, before removing the lawn, it is necessary to cut it again into even rolls. This will greatly simplify the dismantling task.

  • First, mark the plot.

  • Using a sharp knife we cut the old roll lawn back into rolls.
  • We pry the canvas on one side adjacent to the curb or other obstacle.
  • Then gently pry or cut the bottom of the turf.
  • Even taking into account the fact that under the rolled lawn there is a substrate that prevents the roots from catching on the main soil, all the same, over the years of using the lawn, the turf seemed to stick to the base.
  • To pry turf, you need a sharp tool.
  • Then we roll the lawn into rolls and remove from the site.

Removing the old lawn from the site is necessary only when you are going to lay a new rolled lawn. If you no longer intend to use rolled lawns, then after dismantling the old lawn, you must remove the backing film and completely remove the backfill. The plot is filled with fertile soil, after which you can sow a sowing lawn or use the plot for other purposes - to set up a garden or garden.

If you intend to start a construction site on the site of an old lawn, then you do not need to fill in fertile soil, it is enough to remove all the bedding.

Dismantling the old lawn is always troublesome, as you have to carefully remove a large area of green space. To argue faster, it is better to invite a couple of friends or relatives to help.
