Users of Windows 7/10 operating systems often need to adjust the screen brightness. This is a fairly simple procedure, however, some owners of computers, laptops and tablets often have difficulties with its implementation. In this article we will consider all possible ways to adjust the brightness of the monitor, so that after getting acquainted with the material, even novice users can easily carry out this operation.

Adjusting screen brightness with regular Windows 7/10 tools

The simplest and most obvious way to brightness parameters in the environment of the operating system itself is through the Windows Control Panel. We go into it using the Start menu, and then select the "Power" section (in the display mode "Small Icons" or "Large Icons").

Below we see the “Screen Brightness” slider, moving which you can increase or decrease the backlight intensity of your monitor.

It is also possible to go directly to the settings of the selected power scheme. Here, when using a laptop, you can separately adjust the brightness for battery and mains operation.

Owners of modern portable devices running Windows 10 should be aware of another "trick". Many new laptops are equipped with a light sensor that allows adaptive adjustment of screen brightness. That is, the "ten" automatically adjusts the backlight level depending on the amount of light entering the sensor. It is clear that this function does not always work correctly, often exposing an not entirely appropriate degree of brightness. Therefore, the question quite reasonable arises of how to turn it off. You can do this by clicking on the link “Change advanced power settings” in the settings of the current power plan.

In the window that opens, expand the “Screen” tab and switch the “Enable adaptive brightness adjustment” parameter to the “Off” position. Click the “Apply” button to save the settings.

Correcting brightness using a graphics card driver

Another proven way to change the brightness of the screen is to adjust it using the video card driver. Consider this method using the Nvidia drivers as an example. We right-click on the desktop and select "Nvidia Control Panel" in the context menu.

In the settings tree on the left, open the "Display" section and select the line "Adjust desktop color settings" in the drop-down list. In the right area, set the switch to "Use NVIDIA settings" and move the "Brightness" slider in one direction or another, thereby increasing or decreasing the backlight strength.

Adjust display brightness on laptop

Laptop computers allow you to control many settings using the keyboard buttons. Usually, a special “Fn” key is used for these purposes, working in combination with other keys. For example, adjusting the screen brightness on a Samsung RV515 laptop is done by pressing the following button combinations:

Brightness increase
Dimming

On different models of laptops, the backlight intensity is adjusted by different keyboard shortcuts. Often, a combination of Fn and any of the function keys of the F1-F12 range is used. For more information on how to change the brightness of the display of your laptop, see the manual for it.

Setting the brightness on the monitor itself

In most cases, modern monitors have their own buttons on the case to control the settings for color, contrast, brightness and other parameters. As an example, consider the LG IPS236 monitor. On the control panel, he has several touch buttons, press any and get to the “Monitor Setup” menu.

We select the first item “Menu” and see the scales for adjusting brightness, contrast and clarity. Using the arrows, we move to the desired line and set the optimal value.

In a similar way, the issue is solved with other models of monitors, only the configuration and location of the keypad differ.

In principle, many screen settings, including brightness, can be adjusted in the monitor itself. And here it will no longer matter what kind of operating system is installed on the computer. Instructions for manual settings are attached to the monitor upon purchase, it can also be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website in electronic form.

Conclusion

This is all we wanted to tell about methods for adjusting the screen brightness on a desktop computer and laptop. We hope that after reading this material you will no longer have questions about how to increase or decrease the brightness of any type of display in just a few simple steps.

Adjustment methods

One of the easiest ways to change the brightness of the screen is to make settings using the buttons on the monitor. You can also solve the problem through the BIOS settings. But in this article we will focus on the possibilities of solving the problem precisely with Windows 7 tools or with the help of software that is installed on a computer with this OS.

All options can be divided into 3 groups:

  • Adjustment using third-party software,
  • Adjustment using the video card management application,
  • OS tools.

Now we will consider each group in more detail.

Method 1: Monitor Plus

First, we will learn how to solve the voiced problem using a third-party program designed to control the Monitor Plus monitor.

  1. This program does not require installation. Therefore, after downloading it, simply unzip the contents of the archive and activate the Monitor.exe application executable file. A miniature program control panel will open. In it, the numbers indicate the current brightness (in first place) and contrast (in second place) of the monitor through a fraction.

To change the brightness, first of all, make sure that the value in the Monitor Plus header is set to “Monitor - Brightness”.

If set there "Contrast" or "Colour", then in this case, click on the item to switch the mode "Following"represented in the form of an icon «=»until the desired value is set. Or apply a combination Ctrl + J.

After the desired value appears on the program panel, press to increase the brightness "Enlarge" in the shape of an icon «+».

If you use a hotkey combination Ctrl + Shift + Num +, then with each set of this combination, the value will increase by 10%.

To decrease the value, click on the button "Reduce" in the shape of a sign «-».

With each click, the indicator will be reduced by 1%.

When using a combination Ctrl + Shift + Num- the value will be reduced immediately by 10%.

You can control the screen in a miniature state, but if you want to more accurately set the settings for viewing various types of content, then click on the button Show - Hide in the form of an ellipsis.

  • A list of PC content and operating modes opens, for which you can set the brightness level separately. There are such modes:
    • Photos
    • Cinema (Cinema),
    • Video
    • Game
    • Text
    • Web (Internet),
    • User

For each mode, the recommended parameter is already indicated. To use it, highlight the mode name and press the button "Apply" in the form of a sign «>».

After that, the monitor settings will be changed to those that correspond to the selected mode.

  • But if for some reason the values that are assigned to a certain mode by default are not suitable for you, then they can easily be changed. To do this, select the mode name, and then in the first field to the right of the name, drive in the percentage value that you want to assign.
  • Method 2: F.lux

Another program that can work with the settings of the monitor parameter we are studying is F.lux. Unlike the previous application, it is able to automatically adjust to specific lighting, according to the daily rhythm in your area.

After downloading the program, you should install it. Run the installation file. A window opens with a license agreement. You need to confirm it by clicking "Accept".

    Next, the program is installed.

A window is activated where, to fully configure the system under F.lux, it is proposed to restart the PC. Save data in all active documents and exit applications. Then press "Restart Now".

After rebooting, the program determines your location automatically via the Internet. But you can also indicate your default position in the absence of the Internet. To do this, in the window that opens, click on the inscription "Specify the default location".

The built-in utility of the operating system opens, in which you should specify in the fields "Postcode" and "A country" relevant data. Other information in this window is optional. Click "Apply".

In addition, simultaneously with the previous system windows, the F.lux program window will open, in which your location will be displayed according to information from the sensors. If true, just click OK. If it does not match, then indicate the point of real location on the map, and then click OK.

After that, the program will itself adjust the most optimal screen brightness depending on whether day or night, morning or evening in your area. Naturally, for this F.lux should constantly be running on the computer in the background.

  • But if you are not satisfied with the current brightness that the program recommends and sets, you can adjust it manually by dragging the slider left or right in the main F.lux window.
  • Method 3: graphics card management program

Now we learn how to solve the problem with the program for managing the video card. Typically, this application is available on the installation disc that came with the video adapter and is installed with the drivers for the video card. We will look at the actions using the example of a program for controlling the NVIDIA video adapter.

The program for managing the video adapter is registered in autorun and starts with the operating system, working in the background. To activate its graphical shell, move to the tray and look for the icon there NVIDIA Settings. Click on it.

If for some reason the application is not added to the autorun, or you have forcibly terminated it, you can start it manually. Go to "Desktop" and click on the free space with the right mouse button (RMB) In the activated menu, click NVIDIA Control Panel.

Another option for launching the tool we need is to activate it through Windows Control Panel. Click "Start" and then go to "Control Panel".

In the window that opens, go to the section "Design and personalization".

Going to the section, click on NVIDIA Control Panel.

Starts up NVIDIA Control Panel. In the left area of the program shell in the block "Display" move to section "Adjust desktop color settings".

The color adjustment window opens. If several monitors are connected to your computer, then in the block “Select the display whose settings you want to change” select the name of the one you want to configure. Next go to the block "Choose a color setting method". In order to be able to change parameters through the shell "NVIDIA Control Panels"switch the radio button to Use NVIDIA Settings. Then go to the option "Brightness" and, by dragging the slider left or right, decrease or increase the brightness accordingly. Then click "Apply", after which the changes will be saved.

You can separately configure the settings for the video. Click on the item "Adjust color settings for video" in block "Video".

  • In the window that opens, in the block “Select the display whose settings you want to change” select the target monitor. In block "How to make color settings" set the switch to Use NVIDIA Settings. Open tab "Colour"if another is open. To increase the brightness of the video, drag the slider to the right, and to decrease the brightness, drag it to the left. Click "Apply". The entered settings will be applied.
  • Method 4: Personalization

The settings of interest to us can be adjusted using only OS tools, in particular, a tool Window Color in section "Personalization". But for this, one of the Aero themes must be active on the PC. In addition, it should be noted that the settings will not be changed not only displayed on the screen, but only the borders of the windows, Taskbars and menu "Start".

Open "Desktop" and click RMB on an empty place. In the menu, select "Personalization".

Also, the tool that interests us can be launched through "Control Panel". For this, in this section "Design and personalization" click on the inscription "Personalization".

A window appears “Changing the image and sound on the computer”. Click on the name Window Color at the bottom.

The system starts changing the color of the borders of the windows, the menu "Start" and Taskbars. If you do not see the adjustment parameter we need in this window, click "Show color setting".

  • Additional tuning tools appear, which consist of controls for hue, brightness and saturation. Depending on whether you want to decrease or increase the brightness of the above interface elements, drag the slider to the left or right, respectively. After making the settings to apply them, click Save Changes.
  • Method 5: Calibrate Colors

You can also change the specified monitor parameter by using color calibration. But you will have to use the buttons located on the monitor.

Being in the section "Control Panel""Design and personalization"press "Screen".

In the left block of the window that opens, click "Calibration of colors".

The monitor color calibration tool starts. In the first window, read the information presented in it and click "Further".

Now you need to activate the menu button on the monitor, and in the window click on "Further".

The gamma adjustment window opens. But, since we have a narrow goal to change a specific parameter, and not to make general screen settings, click on the button "Further".

In the next window, by dragging the slider up or down, you can just set the brightness of the monitor. If you drag the slider down, the monitor will be darker, and up - lighter. After adjustment, press "Further".

After that, it is proposed to switch to controlling the brightness control on the monitor itself by pressing the buttons on its body. And in the color calibration window, click "Further".

On the next page, it is proposed to adjust the brightness, achieving such a result as shown in the center picture. Press "Further".

Using the brightness controls on the monitor, make sure that the image in the window that opens matches the central picture on the previous page. Click "Further".

After that, the contrast adjustment window opens. Since we are not faced with the task of adjusting it, we just click "Further". Those users who still want to adjust the contrast can do this in the next window exactly according to the same algorithm as before adjusting the brightness.

In the window that opens, as mentioned above, either adjust the contrast, or just click "Further".

The color balance adjustment window opens. This settings item within the studied topic does not interest us, and therefore click "Further".

In the next window also click "Further".

  • Then a window opens in which it is reported that the new calibration has been successfully created. It is immediately proposed to compare the current calibration option with that which was before the introduction of adjustments. To do this, click on the buttons “Old Calibration” and "Current calibration". In this case, the display on the screen will change according to these settings. If, when comparing a new version of the brightness level with the previous one, everything suits you, then you can finish working with the screen color calibration tool. You can uncheck the item “Launch the ClearType Tuner ...”, since if you only changed the brightness, you will not need this tool. Then click Done.
  • As you can see, the ability to adjust the screen brightness of computers exclusively with standard OS tools in Windows 7 is quite limited. So you can only adjust the window border settings, Taskbars and menu "Start". If you need to make a full adjustment of the monitor brightness, then you have to use the buttons located directly on it. Fortunately, it is possible to solve this problem by using third-party software or a video card management program. These tools will allow you to fully customize the screen without using the buttons on the monitor.
