Verizon is the largest mobile phone service provider in the United States. They have 146 million subscribers for 2017, but only 5.43 million prepaid.

For 2G, their CDMA uses the 1XRTT system, as well as for 3G, which is called EV-DO, and both are completely incompatible with GSM. CDMA are on BC0 and BC1. BC0 is the most common CDMA frequency, so most CDMA compatible phones support it. Remember that there are fewer CDMA-compatible phones, so don’t assume that your phone supports CDMA unless you have tested it. In this case, without CDMA, you can use LTE, if the phone is compatible.

In 4G / LTE it has the best coverage, high speed and the most reliable network in the country (4G / LTE coverage map and comparison with its competitors: HERE). Verizon already covers more than 305 million or 98% of the US population with more than 2.4 million square miles in 2016, while LTE T-Mobile covers only 1.4 million miles.

Since 2014, Verizon 4G / LTE network is available for prepaid subscribers. Verizon LTE mainly uses 700 MHz (band 13) with additional coverage at 1700 MHz / 2100 MHz (AWS, band 4), 1900 MHz (PCS, band 2) and 850 MHz (band 5), which are some of those the same frequencies used by AT&T and T-Mobile in the USA.

The idea is to bring your own device (BYOD) and register it on Verizon. The problem is that Verizon only allows certain phones. CDMA users from Japan, China or Canada should check the frequencies because their “pay-as-you-go” and “daily plans” are for Verizon core phones only, their new monthly prepaid plans for major non-smartphones are even more limited.

In 2015, Verizon became more flexible for connecting devices from other operators. They launched the program to activate the new iPhone 6 and Nexus 6 devices on their network (see here). The rules for open access to the 700 MHz spectrum prohibit restricting the use of any compatible device to subscribers.

Until recently, even if an active Verizon LTE SIM card was installed in the Nexus 6 or 7 or Pixel or an unlocked iPhone 6/6 Plus or later, Verizon did not activate the SIM card if it was not in the Verizon device. This is no longer the case. Verizon now allows you to activate at least some phones other than Verizon. You can check whether the phone is suitable on this Verizon page, where you can enter the IMEI or MEID of an unlocked non-Verizon device.

As a GSM user, you can only think about how to use Verizon if you brought one of the LTE smartphones with support for bands 2, 4 and 13, like the iPhone 6 or 7 or the international Xiaomi Mi Note 2. In addition to all Verizon, Nexus 5X phones, 6 and 6P, Google Pixel (both in the US and international versions), Moto G 4 and 5 generations, LG GV unlocked (G5 / V20 or newer), and Samsung Galaxy unlocked (S7 or newer) will also work. When activating LTE phones, a Verizon SIM card is required. All these phones require Verizon Prepa>> more details here).

Other phones that Verizon's activation system recognizes as not originally intended for use on their network will not be activated. To make the phone work, there are 3 options:

  • First you need to activate the SIM card in your Verizon phone and later put it on your phone.
  • Call technical support, they may request activation of the SIM card depending on the agent.
  • If you receive a SIM card from an authorized retailer with a prepaid plan, it will already be activated. No phone is required, but they will ask for which phone it is needed for. You just need to name a supported phone, similar to yours.

Verizon does not prohibit the use of non-Verizon phones on the network, but they do not recommend this and will not provide support if there is a problem with the phone on the network. It must be remembered that:

  • Without CDMA and EV-DO there will be no decline in places without 4G / LTE coverage
  • The phone must support Verizon VoLTE for voice. You must also enable VoLTE in your account.
  • Some features may not work, such as time synchronization, visual voicemail and SMS.

These restrictions do not apply if your phone supports CDMA BC0.

Replenishment

Verizon offers many ways to fund your account. PIN cards or US $ 15 to $ 150 codes are available at Verizon stores, most stores, supermarkets, online pharmacies and retail chains such as Best Buy and Target.

They are valid from 30 to 365 days, depending on the amount of replenishment. Verizon SIM cards can be reused, inactive SIM cards can be re-activated.

Automatic payments using a credit or debit card can be set up online or by calling * 611 from a mobile phone or (888) 294-6804 from another phone. You can also make a one-time payment using a credit or debit card online. Unfortunately, some non-US cards are declined, if not all.

Smartphone Plans

Their monthly plans for smartphones are only prepaid plans for high-end phones and include unlimited calls, text messages and MMS in the USA and text messages in 170 countries for 30 days:

  • $ 40: 3 GB
  • $ 50: 7 GB
  • $ 60: 10 GB
  • $ 80: “unlimited” data: data transfer rate - streaming video with a resolution of up to 480 pixels, the use of a mobile Internet access / distribution point is excluded during network congestion “unlimited” data can be depriorized at the discretion of Verizon.

Unused data can be carried over to the next month. Verizon has introduced a permanent data feature that allows you to continue to use data at a speed of 128 Kbps after the data limit is used. Additional high-speed data can be added using the Bridge data packages, which are available in three sizes:

  • 500 MB for 30 days: $ 5
  • 1 GB for 90 days: $ 10
  • 3 GB for 90 days: $ 20

Unlike all Verizon MVNOs, where the data transfer rate is limited to 5 Mbps, Verizon prepaid data is not regulated. The data transfer rate reaches 95 Mbps, although a typical 20 Mbps or less.

Mobile Broadband Plans

Face the same limitations on tablets and modems in their plans for data transfer only. SIM cards must be paired with a Verizon certified tablet or modem.

  • $ 15: 500 MB for 1 week
  • $ 20: 1 GB for 1 month
  • $ 35: 2 GB for 2 months
  • $ 60: 5 GB for 2 months
  • $ 100: 10 GB for 2 months

Internet distribution

Verizon does not limit the distribution of boarding to their not unlimited plans. Therefore, it might be a good idea to purchase a MIFI or mobile access point to join the Verizon network and connect it to your devices via WiFi. Verizon's core 4G / LTE hotspots, which they call “Jetpacks,” are available starting at $ 100. Third-party resellers such as Best Buy, Target or Walmart sometimes reduce their value to $ 50.
