11/08/2016 Newborns Putting a newborn baby to bed is not an easy task. Because it is necessary that the baby not only fit in, but also sleep well for the joy and peace of his young parents. We will tell you how to achieve this in this article!

Exploring the topic of baby sleep, I attended several lectures by specialists in leading clinics. That's what the experts said.

Sleep for newborns is one of the basic needs. She is on par with food, mother's warmth and care. But you must admit that a mother, if she had a good night's sleep, can give her family much more tenderness and care.

In words, all this sounds beautiful, but in reality it happens something like this: the third day passes, mother’s eyes are already beating and her knees are bent from fatigue, and the mission to “euthanize the baby” seems to be possible only for a superwoman.

Why are the kids falling asleep so badly or not sleeping at all?

There can be several reasons for sleep disturbance:

  1. Physiological: for example, when a child is bothered by colic or his teeth are being cut
  2. Important stages of development: when the child is ready to go or speak, and this is a kind of transition period.
  3. Not obvious diseases or pains: for example, ICP - intracranial pressure.

Suppose that all of the above is excluded, and the baby is naughty, he does not sleep and does not give you. He falls asleep in the morning, wakes up in the afternoon and walks again until the morning. Here, in my opinion, it is worth remembering that children are guests in our lives. And guests must adapt to the host mode. Therefore, you have every right to accustom your child to a regimen that suits you and is already adopted in the family.

Of course, this will take some time and effort, but everything is real. Therefore, we offer you a selection of proven methods of how to put your baby to sleep and teach him to a certain mode.

Method number 2

The favorite way of Soviet mothers, in my opinion, still works. There are several options. You can choose what is convenient for yourself or try different variations: on the handles, in the cradle, crib, sling, on the fitball.

It is also an effective way for the smallest, it gives a feeling of comfort and security. True, choosing this method, it is important to be careful - did not download or pumped, unsuccessfully transferred from hand to bed and all - "our song is good, start over." Well, significant physical training of mom

Method №3 Feeding

Eat and sleep: having satisfied one need, you can switch to another. Therefore, often babies fall asleep immediately, or even during feeding, especially in those mothers who are breastfeeding. Firstly, newborns make considerable efforts to eat. For them it is hard work, and they manage to get tired. And secondly, after eating, it’s good to sleep too. The main disadvantage of the method, the baby can wake up when it is transferred or taken away from the chest or bottle.

If you want the baby to sleep more at night and fall asleep faster in the evening, we advise you to slightly underfeed in the penultimate feeding, and before eating the main dream, give it a meal. In 3-5 days, a certain regimen will already develop in infants. Of course, it will change over time, but this will help to leave the main day and night sleep practically unchanged.

Method number 5 Lullaby

A mother recognizes her mother’s voice from birth, and from a month already her smell. That is why it is so hard for someone else to comfort your child. Therefore, even if you have no "voice", you do not know how to sing and will simply repeat the "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah", the child will fall asleep fairly quickly. If a child develops an association “lullaby = sleep” and adds a certain regimen, then success will be guaranteed.

Method number 6 Rituals

Calm I'm not talking about sacrifice. Each mom and dad can develop certain habits, rituals that will be associated in children with sleep. For example, reading fairy tales, calm conversations when you say that time is already in bed, because the day was long and everyone was tired, parting with the sun, massage the tummy and the like. This is especially suitable for children from six months old and older, with whom you can already try to negotiate.

Method number 7 Bathroom

Usually a warm bath is good for babies. Especially if they can flop there enough. You can add decoctions of soothing herbs to the water, but consult your pediatrician first. Because some people think that calendula and a series of dry skin. Observe the reaction - if the children begin to rub their eyes, it remains only to feed and lay.

Method number 9 Watch

This is a fairly effective way if you want to change or adjust the already existing mode of the baby for yourself. Observe a few days when the baby falls asleep and wakes up, and wake him half an hour earlier until your biorhythms are aligned.

If you have sleepyhead, feel free to wake him up sooner. However, it should be noted that this is a rather long and painstaking process. It is necessary to monitor the regime. Otherwise, the child will begin to fall asleep and wake up randomly, and you will need to start all over again.

Method number 10 For the "iron ladies"

If you have an iron extract, a full cabinet of valerian and tea with lemon balm, then you can try this method. Suppose that with the regime you are already fine and the baby is used to falling asleep at about the same time. You will need: one mom or dad, one child or two, one bed. When the baby begins to rub his eyes, yawn and be naughty - the time has come.

Take the small one (if you played with him before, then you need to reassure the child, but do not pump in and do not give food), and put him in the crib. Hum softly or talk about something, standing by the bed so that the child sees you, preventing tears and crying. If in 10-15 minutes the tears transform into a tantrum, take it on your hands, calm it down, but do not let it fall asleep on your hands, put it back in the crib. Stand next to the crib until the baby falls asleep. On average, the process can take 45-60 minutes, not more.

And another 11 way! sequencing

Accustom the child to certain actions that precede sleep every time. For example: eat, massage, lullaby, sleep or bathing, eat, fairy tale, sleep. Do this at the same time every day. Subsequently, the baby will get used to fall asleep at the same time, after certain sequential actions.

Do not forget to involve dad in the process, otherwise then you will have to constantly lay the baby herself. At 3 months, the baby already clearly recognizes the smell of mom and dad, their voice and body temperature. Therefore, if dad is “behind the scenes” at this time, the baby will only get used to mom.

Remember that the child must adapt to you, not you to him. Despite the fact that telling the baby: “you have 5 minutes, go wash and sleep” - it makes no sense, so you will have to make some efforts to develop joint habits.

The child is a month old, sleeps poorly, often wakes up and cries: what to do?

The restless sleep of children in the first months of life is perhaps the most exhausting test for parents of newborns. The child does not sleep well in a month, and in two, and in three, and there is no end to this. How to put your baby to sleep with a guarantee? Dr. Harvey recalls that the child has an early reflex of calm in the first weeks and months of life - and teaches how to use it if your child often sprinkles and cries.

The calming reflex in a child in the first months of life is activated only when we accurately recreate the sensations that he experienced in the womb. There are 4 tricks to perfectly simulate the conditions in the mother’s womb, here they are:

  1. Swaddling.
  2. The sound "Sh-Sh-Sh" - or a loud, rumbling white noise.
  3. Rocking.
  4. Sucking - on your chest, on your clean thumb, bottle, or soother.

These techniques are not just liked by children, they give them a sense of incredible calm and serenity. Use them when the baby begins to worry or when he needs to sleep.

The key to the reflex of tranquility is to find the very combination of techniques that is right for your child. So let's look at these tricks one at a time.

First technique: swaddling

During pregnancy, your little treasure is inside a dense ball for several months. But after birth, the sudden absence of the walls of the uterus restraining it allows the baby to twist the handles like windmills, to beat himself in the face. and wake the whole house.

The diaper prevents children from waking up after each twitching and trembling. For many children, swaddling does not produce an instant soothing effect, but does not allow them to wave their hands and beat themselves. And after you add one or two more steps to swaddling, the baby will suddenly turn on the soothing reflex and he will be able to fall asleep in a sweet sleep.

Keep in mind that many babies resist when swaddled. They fight with a diaper and shout, they obviously do not like all this. Nevertheless, children like it. And they will be glad that they will be swaddled if we continue to do so. in combination with a few more correctly performed techniques.

Safe swaddling:

  • Use a large (approximately 110 cm side) square diaper or a ready-made swaddling envelope.
  • A baby wrapped in a diaper should only sleep on his back!
  • Make sure the baby is neither hot nor cold. At a comfortable temperature, his ears are warm, not cold and not hot (and red), and his neck does not sweat.
  • Swaddle only for the time of daytime, nighttime sleep and during periods of anxiety (and not twenty-four hours a day!).

And now we will answer the most common questions related to swaddling.

Swaddling harms the baby's hip joints?

Old swaddling techniques (when the legs were straightened so that the child could not move them) could lead to hip dysplasia. But with the modern method of "wide" swaddling, there is no such risk, provided that you leave enough space for your hips.

Employees at the International Institute for the Treatment of Hip Dysplasia have argued that swaddling is safe if the baby can bend her knees and move her hips apart.

If I swaddle my baby with arms, he will not be able to suck a finger and not learn to calm down on his own?

While in the womb, the children suck their big fingers, because in the limited space of their mother’s abdomen their hands are just next to their mouth. But after birth, the pens begin to scatter in all directions, and when the baby tries to suck a finger, it gets into the mouth, nose, and sometimes into the eye!

While awake, you can let your little angel practice fingering. but you don’t want him to accidentally beat himself with his hands and wake up in a dream. I recommend that during the day and night sleep to satisfy his need for sucking with the help of a pacifier, and wrap the handles in a diaper for at least the first four months.

Can swaddling interfere with breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding is harmed by the tiredness of the mother and the cries of the baby. Therefore, the ability to calm a crying baby and establish his sleep will benefit breastfeeding and will not hinder him.

However, in the first week or two, some wrapped in swaddling babies sleep so tightly that they have to be woken up every two hours in the afternoon (and every four or five hours at night) to feed.

Second trick: "shhhh" - the sound of silence

The loud “shhh” sound on a young child is soothing and relaxing. Why? Remember that the sound they constantly heard in the womb was louder than the buzz of the vacuum cleaner turned on!

So the silence in the room, which we consider necessary for relaxation, actually drives babies crazy. To activate the calming reflex when the baby is crying, you need a low, rumbling, hissing sound, as loud as the baby's crying. You can just bend over the baby’s ear and say out loud: "Shhhhhhhhh."

After the child calms down, lower the level of white noise to about the volume of water pouring from the shower (65–70 decibels) so that the soothing reflex remains on.

Just like swaddling, white noise should not be used twenty-four hours a day. Turn it on when the baby is crying, as well as on daytime and nighttime sleep (put a record in advance, in the background, before going to bed).

I recommend using CDs, mobile apps, and mp3s with your baby’s favorite white noise, rather than special audio devices. The good thing about CDs and digital recordings is that you can choose the sound that is most effective and adjust its volume.

How to choose sounds as close as possible to those that unborn children hear? To understand what your baby heard in the uterus, try this little experiment.

Turn on the water in the bathroom at full capacity. Hear what a loud, sharp, high sound it is? And now, when the bath is almost full, climb into it and lower your head under the water. Notice that the sound has become much lower and deeper?

This deep sound is close to what the children hear in the womb. That is why the maximum effect on them is exerted not by sharp hissing sounds, but by rumbling, low ones. It is these sounds that are needed to make the child sleep better, and at the same time - you yourself!

Can white noise harm a baby’s hearing?

There is no evidence of any negative effect of white noise (in volume equal to the noise of water in the shower) on a child’s hearing. Do not forget that in the uterus, the child for several months around the clock heard much louder sounds.

The main thing is to remember that white noise should be activated only during periods of sleep and increased anxiety. The rest of the time, the baby’s hearing should be tuned to the usual sounds for your home.

Third technique: motion sickness

Every night, battalions of zombie parents get into cars and drive around the city - while carefully looking for “speed bumps” and hoping that this shaking will help the children fall asleep. Their children calm down only during movement. Rocking chairs, baby slings, gymnastic balls and a swing for newborns are necessary tools to calm these little lovers to move and shake.

The undoubted advantage of a swing for newborns is that they give parents a little freedom, and provide the children with the calming movement that they need during day and night sleep. But it’s important use them correctly.

  • Use only the swing-down swing. and descending completely! A small child is not yet strong enough to sit. His neck may bend, making it very difficult for him to breathe. The back of the swing should lower to a horizontal position.
  • Talk to your doctor before using the swing. This is especially true for babies with a weak neck (those who are not yet a month old, premature babies, or babies with neurological problems that cause muscle weakness - what doctors call hypotension).
  • Be sure to swaddle the baby and fasten it properly (do not forget to skip the belt between the legs).
  • Choose a high swing speed. It may seem too high to you, but believe me - it is completely safe. Motion sickness at low speed is ineffective in the case when it is necessary to turn on the soothing reflex in a child who loves movement.
  • Protect the baby from uninvited guests. Jumping dogs and restless little ones who already know how to walk can turn the swing over, so if there are any in the house, in no case leave the swinging baby unattended.

Fourth trick: sucking

But this does not mean that it is used last. On the contrary, in most cases, the first thing you need to do is take the baby in his arms and offer him a chest.

The very process of sucking and breast milk not only give it a feeling of satiety, but also contribute to the production of endorphin (the “natural drug” of the body), trigger a rush of tryptophan (the amino acid that causes sleep) and, of course, trigger a soothing reflex.

What about pacifiers? The American Pediatric Academy recommends putting babies to sleep at night with a pacifier. When offering a baby a pacifier, try not to harm him. You need to do this:

  • Buy clear silicone pacifiers, not yellow latex. Yellow latex nipples become sticky and deteriorate after a while, and can also emit microscopic doses of harmful chemicals.
  • Never dip a pacifier in syrup or honey. This can cause childhood botulism, a potentially fatal disease.
  • Wash your pacifier with soap and water every day. Sami never take a nipple in your mouth in order to clean it. So you can accidentally infect a baby with a cold and even herpes.
  • Never hang a pacifier on the baby’s neck. A rope can wrap tightly around his fingers (obstructing blood circulation) or his neck (causing a risk of suffocation).

Nursing mothers are often worried: "But will the nipple prevent breastfeeding?"

Many babies can suck everything you put in their mouths with success. Но у некоторых детей на грудном вскармливании развивается так называемая "путаница сосков", если им начинают давать бутылочки или соски-пустышки до того, как они полностью приноровятся к маминой груди.
