There are several repair methods, the most popular of which is cold welding for a silencer.

Causes of muffler breakdown

Since the silencer has practically no protection against the influence of the external environment, it is made of durable materials so that its service life is longer. Road quality, obstacles, and even simple bounces of stones lead to muffler damage.

However, mechanical influence is not the most common cause of breakdowns. Mostly chemical corrosion leads to breakdowns. The environment in which the silencer operates can be called aggressive. Because water, snow, and also various reagents for protection of roads from icing get on its case. All this sticks to the surface and leads to burnout of the muffler.

Ultimately, a hole appears in the muffler that rust makes, or because of the very obstacles on the road. If the damage is serious, then the silencer is usually changed. But if the damage is small, then one of the ways to repair it is used.

Ways to repair the exhaust system

The whole process boils down to plugging holes in the muffler and cracks caused by corrosion of the metal or external damage. The following methods are distinguished:

  1. Welding. To perform it, the seams must be of a certain stiffness and tightness, and this cannot be achieved with large holes or cracks. Sometimes it’s right not to weld, but to weld a new part onto the part. But all these works require equipment, facilities and skills.
  2. Sealants. Sealants that are not susceptible to heat can be used. They cover up very minor holes, and they also seal the exhaust system when replacing parts in it or assembling.
  3. Bandage. Ceramic-based tapes can also withstand high temperatures and are an easy way to fix a muffler. Most often, the bandage is used for small holes and at the joints and welds.
  4. Cold welding. It differs from ordinary welding. Connections occur without exposure to temperature, due to the penetration of the welding mass into the necessary parts.

Each of these methods has pros and cons, so the choice is not always simple. Due to the frequent use of cold welding, which does not require special equipment and preparation, but has a very effective effect, it is worth mentioning in more detail.

Cold Muffler Repair

To understand how to seal a muffler with cold welding, you should start by determining what it is. This 2-component adhesive is widely used. It has many advantages, among which are:

  • Resistance to water, reagents, high temperatures (up to 150 degrees).
  • Resistance to shock loads (up to 120 kgf / cm²) and vibrations.
  • Ease of use, so anyone can handle cold welding.
  • The cost is not great.
  • Welding dries easily, but for a full set, they usually wait a day.
  • It is applied in any conditions.

Of course, there are disadvantages. Among them:

  • Use with caution due to the toxicity of the material.
  • Cold welding is not suitable for large-scale holes.
  • You need to choose the right composition.
  • Use only until the expiration date.

Of course, there are more advantages than disadvantages, so this repair method has gained such popularity. Among the positive ones there is ease of use and this is easy to prove by looking at the algorithm for repairing a muffler by cold welding:

  1. A fabric, tourniquet or clamp is useful for fixing.
  2. Before work, the surface is cleaned, degreased and cleaned with sandpaper.
  3. Wear gloves to prevent reagents from injuring your hands.
  4. The mixture is mixed according to the instructions. If it is in the syringe, it is worth mixing again.
  5. To avoid the risk of poisoning, repairs are carried out outdoors. Glue is quickly put on the pecked surfaces, for high strength of the joint you need to hold the parts together.
  6. Everything is fixed with a tourniquet.
  7. After an hour, you can clean the glued place from the remnants of glue. Drying is accelerated to 20 minutes, if you draw a temperature of 20-30 degrees.

Many are puzzled by whether it is possible to weld a muffler with cold welding. And the answer, of course, is positive. After all, this is an effective and fairly quick way to eliminate all defects, and this is the most important thing.

How to choose cold welding

When choosing cold welding to repair a muffler, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  1. The time of primary and complete solidification. The latter usually does not differ and is 24 hours, but the first is changing from different manufacturers.
  1. Plasticity time. Shows how much time it will be possible to customize the parts until the glue sets.
  2. Temperature of use. On average, it will be from -20 to +15.
  3. Heat resistance. On average, this value is somewhere up to +260 degrees Celsius. If you need something more persistent, that is, with a limit of +1300 degrees Celsius.
  4. Glue consumption. Depends on the density of the parts to be joined and on the user's experience. A regular tube of 60 ml of paste glue is enough for a seam 25-30 mm long.

On the one hand, so many selection criteria for cold welding for a silencer complicates the choice. However, on the other hand, thanks to such a wide selection, everyone will choose the right material for themselves.

Ceramic tape repair

Ceramic tape is an equally easy way to fix it. It tolerates temperature loads of up to 1000 degrees Celsius thanks to just the ceramic base. To change the whole parts, the tape will not help, but to fix the problem with a small hole or gap - completely.

It is easy to apply a ceramic tape:

  • Clean muffler before repairing.
  • Moisten the tape with water.
  • Wrap at least 2 layers around the damaged area.

Ceramic tape is still a temporary option and will last up to three months. It will not be possible to finally solve the problem with its help, so it only suits as an emergency measure.

Sealant muffler repair

Used for minor breakdowns and for sealing the exhaust system. This method is one of the simplest, because it does not require anything other than acting on instructions and attentiveness.

To repair the muffler with sealant, follow these steps:

  • The sealant area is cleaned with sandpaper.
  • Before applying the composition, the surface is wetted with water.
  • Apply sealant.
  • Wait half an hour until it dries.
  • Start the engine for 15 minutes to allow moisture to evaporate from the sealant.
  • Leave the engine for 12 hours.

Sealants will not work to patch every damage. They are best used as a supplement.

Why does the muffler fail?

Where there is no asphalt, stones most often hit the muffler, flying from under the wheels of the car. It is heated by exhaust gases to a temperature greater than the engine itself, because it does not have a separate cooling system. Of course, during the passage through the exhaust tract, the gases cool down, but not by so much.

Another point is condensation. In the cold season, this problem is especially acute, because before the engine starts, the muffler is cold, and then it gradually heats up, although to a low temperature. Water that condenses on the inner walls does not evaporate, and every day it becomes more and more. And only in the summer, in hot weather, does this phenomenon pass.

Permanent moisture leads to the fact that the "bank" begins to rust and rot, which, in turn, leads to the appearance of cracks and just holes. In addition, the exhaust system, to prevent the occurrence of vibrations, is hung on rubber suspensions, which leads to the appearance of cracks in the welds.

All these factors do not contribute to the long life of the car muffler. First, small foci of corrosion appear, then cracks and holes, and finally, the muffler can simply cease to fulfill its functions, and simply “fall off” along the road.

What is a silencer for?

When designing the engine and other parts of the future car, a huge number of factors and indicators are taken into account. The main functions of the muffler are to reduce the noise level from a running engine, and to maintain the working pressure of the gases in the system. Not just because it was called a silencer.

With cracks in the muffler, firstly, it is possible to reduce the pressure of the exhaust gases, loss of engine power, the car will be “worse to drive”. Of course, this applies to older cars that are not equipped with a catalyst. And secondly, noise is sharply amplified, up to a level that does not allow the operation of the car. The exhaust, as they say, is a secret, and this is even worse than without a silencer in general.

Why is it worth repairing, and not changing immediately? In many modern cars, a silencer is a rather expensive part. In addition to cost, the obvious drawback of this path is the replacement time. The item is not changed often, which means that the probability of its presence in the warehouse, in the store or in the service is rather low. In most cases, the silencer does not fail in its entirety, but only requires the repair of individual parts.

In addition, it makes sense to repair the muffler because modern parts do not differ in quality. In most cases, the new one is enough at best for one and a half to two years.

Silencer repair methods

So, there are several ways to repair a malfunctioning muffler. If only a small hole or crack appears in the muffler, they are usually repaired using high-temperature “cold welding” or sealant.

This method often does not even require removal of the part from the car. In addition, such tools are usually sold in many car dealerships, that is, you do not have to spend time searching. Such compositions are able to withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees, while maintaining their properties. Of course, this is a temporary method, since welding will fly off from vibrations anyway.

If you notice the damage in time and repair it with sealant or cold welding, you can avoid costly repairs and not think about replacing the muffler for quite some time. Also, this method allows you to do without a visit to the service center and carry out repairs on your own. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that repairs need to be carried out in a warm room, because at low temperatures, sealants and “cold welding” lose their adhesion qualities and they just won’t be able to make a good joint at the site of damage.

If the crack in the silencer already has serious dimensions, or the corrosion has made significant holes, then the method of winding the damaged area with a bandage with special impregnations - ceramic or silicate - is used. Such tools are also able to withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees, and in addition, due to winding in several layers, they have good strength characteristics. But in no case should you use epoxy resin with fiberglass. The fact is that the resin will crack under the influence of temperature and simply fall off.

Simply put, in this way it is quite possible to repair a “burnt out” muffler even in the field. This method may require removal of the entire muffler or parts thereof. Such a repair method will not work if the junction of the pipe and resonator is damaged, or, as it is also called, “banks”. In this case, it is necessary to use electric welding.

In no case should you use an electrode welding machine, since even the most experienced and skilled technician will not even be able to weld metal with a 2 mm electrode, the thickness of which does not reach 1 mm. Only semi-automatic wire welding. Of course, argon is also possible, but it is expensive.

For welding, most likely, you will need to dismantle the entire muffler or individual parts, if only the replacement of some parts is required. A damaged part, as a rule, is cut off entirely with a “grinder” or other cutting tool. Instead, a new, similar part is installed by welding.

An important point is the correct selection of replaced parts, because the parameters of the muffler directly affect the operation of the engine. The connection of parts by welding allows you to maintain the tightness of the muffler and its strength. In addition, such a connection is less susceptible to vibration. For repairs by welding, it is recommended that you contact the service or qualified craftsmen with the appropriate equipment.

How to extend the life of a muffler

Can breakage be avoided? Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely exclude the possibility of muffler failure. At the same time, carrying out scheduled inspections and routine repairs can significantly extend the life of this part. Interestingly, this repair method does not portend large financial costs, as is required for simple RDS. Preparation is not needed, a beginner can do the work, since it does not require access to electricity and high temperatures. You need to choose the right cold welding, it is important to know which composition is right for you. Cold welding is available in several versions, all of them have their own physical and chemical characteristics. Let's go through the most effective formulations:

  1. Liquid. It is usually in syringes, contains two components that automatically mix. It is easy to apply the composition, even in hard to reach places. It has a minus in that when it comes into contact with certain tools, it can be damaged after hardening.
  2. Plasticine. There is both a single component and a two-component mixture. A one-component consistency is in contact with air and gives a chemical reaction, and a two-component consistency allows a reaction when mixing the compositions.   • for car maintenance. Ideal for muffler repair.

You can speed up the drying process up to 15-20 minutes, if you expose the composition to a temperature effect of 20-30 ° C. After a day of natural drying, the mixture will finally get stronger and will be ready for any loads.

Ceramic muffler repair

Muffler repair tape is another equally popular way to quickly return a muffler to your senses. All tapes are heat-resistant and can withstand up to 1000 ° C as they have a ceramic base. If the damage is small, only two or three millimeters, then the tightening tape is suitable for local repair, but in no case for the repair of the entire muffler. Typically, the resonator or the silencer itself acts as the characteristic places for the holes. Also, if the device is rotten, it is better to use sealants or bandages.
The repair process is simple:

  1. Need to clean the muffler.
  2. Wet the tape with water for reaction.
  3. Seal the damage with tape, grasping the muffler in a circle.

It is not difficult to change the corrugation, however, this type of repair work requires knowledge of the handling of welding. All that is required is to cut out the part with the grinder, and clean the place of the cut well and weld a new element by welding.
