When fast USB ports of the third version are installed on your computer or laptop, I want to get the most out of the speed of transferring files to a USB flash drive or external drive. But how to check which connectors are really 3.0 and which are old 2.0? Does the flash drive support USB 3.0 mode? USB Device Tree Viewer will help determine this.
What is the speed of usb
In general, four different types of data rates are assumed for a universal bus. They should not be confused with the versions of USB itself. An improved data transfer rate was introduced in each next version of the USB standard, of course, with the support of all the previous ones. It must be taken into account that Universal Serial Bus version 2.0 devices do not always provide data transmission at High-Speed speeds. Full-Speed is a level where maximum speed remains only for some devices. The next version of the USB standard is 3.0. It supports not only SuperSpeed, but also the three previous types of speeds. She also refers to version 2.0, and does not replace it. High-Speed cannot be defined as a version of the standard 3.0, because devices such as Full-Speed, Low-Speed, and High-Speed are USB 2.0, but not USB 3.0.
First of all, pay attention to the year of manufacture of your computer (motherboard). If your device was released before 2010, USB 3.0 cannot be found on it.
You can distinguish between the type of USB ports using a visual inspection:
- USB 1.0 - four pins located on a white plastic panel,
- USB 2.0 is also four pins, but the panel is usually black,
- USB 3.0 - nine pins on a blue plastic panel,
- USB 3.1 is the fastest interface, next to it is the marking “SS” (Super Speed).
Front panels of desktop computers are usually equipped with additional USB ports. However, we do not recommend connecting flash drives to them, since budget motherboards only support USB 2.0 for additional ports.
How to check the type of USB ports in Windows
You can determine the type of port installed using the Windows system tools. We start the Device Manager from the control panel, find the section “USB Controllers” and expand it. If your computer has USB 2.0 ports, then the list of extended host controllers (Enhanced Host Controller) will not contain devices whose names will contain the inscription “USB 3.0”.
If the computer has USB 3.0 ports, the names of the advanced controllers will explicitly indicate “USB 3.0”.
How to add USB 3.0 ports
If your computer does not have "three" support, you can do without upgrading the motherboard. Try an alternative solution - a USB 3.0 adapter. This device exists in several versions:
- Board for PCI Express slot, a great solution for a desktop PC,
- Adapter for ExpressCard, laptop option.
Does the computer have 3.0 ports
To get started, download the latest version of the program from the official website of the developers. It does not require installation. Choose the latest version, run the one that corresponds to the system capacity: Windows 32 and 64 bits are supported.
At the first start, a list of available ports is displayed on the screen. Click on each and read protocol support information on the right.
On the laptop or PC itself, you can find fast connectors for flash drives by the blue color of the plastic insert in them.
How to determine which usb
USB-IF (the USB Implementers Forum) has developed a special logo for each type of speed. Using it, you can determine the correspondence between the device and the standard.
The Windows Device Manager is Device Manager. It will help us find out if a particular USB device supports a particular speed device. In general, it is believed that this is not the most suitable solution to the problem. We will need to try various root USB hubs to find the right device. But how to find out which usb?
First, open the “Device Manager”. To do this, mouse over the menu "My Computer". Right-click on the line “Properties” - “Equipment” and “Device Manager”. Next, we need to expand the “Universal Serial USB Bus Controllers” node and open a window with the properties of the root USB hub. So that it would be convenient for us to work, we will start from the very bottom. The next step is to switch to the “Power” or Power tab.
If our device is connected to this hub, then we can notice that it will appear in the “Connected Devices” or Attached Devices section. Also note that the root USB has exactly six ports. One of them is used by the device.
In order to find out the speed of the Universal Serial Bus, we need to open the “Advanced” or Advanced tab. Root hubs can operate at multiple speeds simultaneously.
Many modern computer peripherals, such as external hard drives, mobile phones, keyboards, video cameras, are connected via a USB cable. Depending on your computer, USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 can be installed on it, as well as more modern versions of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, which are much faster, which improves the performance of your devices.
Click the start button. Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.
In the window that appears, select the "Hardware" tab and then "Device Manager". Click on "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
Look for the word "advanced" in the description of the USB port. If you see this word, it means USB 2.0 port, if you could not find one - port version 1.0 or 1.1. If you see an entry called "xHCI" - the USB port is version 3.0. may also contain the words "USB 3.0"
Another way to determine if your computer is using a USB 3.0 port is to look carefully at the USB cable. The USB 3.0 cable connector has additional pins.

The USB 3.0 interface is much more productive than its predecessor - USB 2.0. While the latter limits the speed of linear data recording on a USB flash drive to an indicator of 30-40 Mb / s, through the first, files on a USB 3.0 flash drive can be copied at a speed of about 100 Mb / s. This is a real example, in theory, the maximum bandwidth of USB 2.0 is 60 Mb / s, and USB 3.0 - 625 Mb / s. In order to take advantage of the USB 3.0 interface, both the media (flash drive, USB-HDD, other storage devices) and a computer must be equipped with it. How do I know if my computer has USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports?
On laptops and PC motherboards released earlier than 2010, USB 2.0 ports are likely to be installed. But computer devices released later can be equipped with USB 3.0.
What USB interface the computer is equipped with can be recognized by the external signs of the ports. The USB 1.0 ports have 4 pins, and the plastic under them is white. The USB 2.0 ports are also equipped with 4 pins, but the plastic under them is usually black. Inside the USB 3.0 port there are as many as 9 contacts, and the plastic under them is usually blue. The latest models of PCs and laptops can be equipped with the most powerful USB 3.1 interface to date with a declared maximum throughput of 1250 Mb / s. Plastic under the contacts of such ports can be painted both black and blue. The USB 3.1 ports are distinguished from the predecessor interfaces by the inscription “SS” (Super Speed) engraved nearby.
PC cases are usually equipped with a front panel with additional USB ports for easy connection of devices. But for such convenience, computer owners who do not know that their motherboards support USB 3.0 are often paid with a tedious wait while moving data to a USB flash drive. Indeed, even modern, but low-cost cases, as a rule, are equipped with USB 2.0 ports.
You can find out if your computer has USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports, using Windows tools. We go into the device manager and open the branch "USB controllers". If the host controllers appear in the list of branches as “Enhanced Host Controller”, and their names do not contain the “USB 3.0” add-on, this means that the computer has USB 2.0 ports.
The presence of USB 3.0 ports will directly speak of the appendix "USB 3.0" in the names of the extended host controllers. The fact that the computer supports USB 3.0 is also evidenced by the presence in the list of controller branches, in the name of which there is the abbreviation XHCI - an indication of the universal eXtensible Host Controller Interface.
How to get USB 3.0 ports if they are not found? A total upgrade in the form of a replacement laptop or PC motherboard with all its dependent components has an alternative - installing a USB 3.0 adapter. For PC assemblies, such adapters exist in the form of cards installed in the PCI Express slot. USB 3.0 adapters are connected to laptops using the ExpressCard slot. On AliExpress, USB 3.0 adapters can be ordered for a promotional price of just over $ 5. This option will give a certain performance boost, but still will not reach the capabilities of USB 3.0, which was originally supported by modern laptops and motherboards. After all, data transfer will be limited by the bandwidth of the corresponding slot.
This material is suitable for beginners and professionals. Some often worry about how to determine the type of USB port. This is especially difficult when all the ports in the laptop are marked in black, although the specifications say that USB 3.0 and 2.0 are present. The truth is not written on which side.
This article will not only help identify USB 3.0, but also try to distinguish fake. The article will be small, but will fully help you figure out what's what.
Determine the type of USB port using Windows
Now I will try to show everything programmatically, and then look at the ports themselves. Most of you know that USB ports have versions 1.0 , 2.0 and 3.0 . Now there is already version 3.1, but it does not matter. To determine the type of USB port, you need to go to Device Manager. In Windows 10, right-click start menu and select the appropriate item (or press the combination Win + x and do the same).
As soon as the window opens, look for the tab "USB controllers" and open it. There we can see many drivers for USB ports. If one of the devices has a word XHCI , then this is USB 3.0, everything else applies to USB 2.0.
Easy? Then we pass to the next version of the definition.
How to determine the type of USB port by appearance?
Let's start with the very first version - USB 1.0, now this option is practically not used in laptops, but it does occur in some mice and other devices. It looks like this: a white port with 4 pins - this is USB 1.0.
USB 2.0 usually painted black and inside also has 4 contacts. The second type is compatible with USB 1.0, but differ only in bandwidth. The second type is faster.
In this example, we looked at a flash drive, but what does the connector look like, for example, in a laptop? This is what it looks like:
Almost no different. An important point - some manufacturers may paint the same USB 2.0 in a different color, for example, orange. Of course, this does not affect the characteristics of the interface.
USB 3.0 looks like blue port and has 9 contacts . Four are in front, the other five are behind. Watch carefully. The ones on the back are a little raised. If the material is blue, then this is definitely USB 3.0. Also, on some computers near the connector you can see the inscription "SS" , which indicates the maximum data transfer rate (Super Speed).
Sometimes you can see USB 2.0, which is also blue, and how to understand this? As I said, developers can use any design. You can determine the type of USB by the number of contacts.
I would like to note that USB 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 are compatible with each other, so you can safely use them as you like. For example, insert the USB 2.0 connector into 3.0, although the speed here will be at 2.0.
So, to summarize, now I will once again describe the features of USB ports:
- White material,
- It has 4 contacts.
- Made of black or blue material. Depending on the preferences of the developers, there may be any other color,
- It has 4 contacts.
- The material is almost always blue, but black is also found,
- There are always 9 contacts - 4 in front and 5 in the back.
That's all I wanted to talk about determining the type of USB ports.
Does the flash drive support 3.0 mode
We connect the drive to the computer. A new connection is displayed in the program window. In the Connection information V2 section, find support for 3.0. The number should be 1, which means protocol support.
Support for a fast universal bus should be both on the port side and on the side of external media! Therefore, check that you are connecting the device to the correct connector.
What mode does the connected device work in?
Click on the connected storage medium or wireless keyboard adapter.
To make sure that the device is operating in maximum mode, switch it to the connector that is guaranteed to support the third version of the protocol. If the protocol information in the program does not change, then the adapter or flash drive is already working at their maximum speed.
