Front panels of desktop computers are usually equipped with additional USB ports. However, we do not recommend connecting flash drives to them, since budget motherboards only support USB 2.0 for additional ports.

How to check the type of USB ports in Windows

You can determine the type of port installed using the Windows system tools. We start the Device Manager from the control panel, find the section “USB Controllers” and expand it. If your computer has USB 2.0 ports, then the list of extended host controllers (Enhanced Host Controller) will not contain devices whose names will contain the inscription “USB 3.0”.

If the computer has USB 3.0 ports, the names of the advanced controllers will explicitly indicate “USB 3.0”.

How to add USB 3.0 ports

If your computer does not have "three" support, you can do without upgrading the motherboard. Try an alternative solution - a USB 3.0 adapter. This device exists in several versions:

  • Board for PCI Express slot, a great solution for a desktop PC,
  • Adapter for ExpressCard, laptop option.
