Dog breeding is a very interesting and fascinating, but at the same time very long and laborious process, requiring great knowledge and the desire to constantly acquire this knowledge. This activity is not for those who want everything at once. It is impossible to talk about a serious approach to breeding if the breeder has one or two bitches and is unable to plan the next and next generations. Even a successful litter cannot serve as an indicator of the success of the breeder if he does not know or does not understand how to continue working with these quality puppies.

A serious approach to breeding consists of several stages:

The first and fundamental rule for a breeder is to determine the type of dog that he likes the most. Of course, this is not about one champion or manufacturer, but rather about the type. That is, when planning to work with a breed, a person should know exactly what kind of heads he would like to see in his dogs, what bodies, what size, etc. The presence in the breed of a huge number of different types of dogs allows him to decide on this. If we analyze the population in several countries, it will be clearly seen that dogs are very different in type from each other. A breeder with extensive experience and knowledge can determine exactly what kind of blood she carries in her pedigree by the appearance of the dog.

In practice, this may look something like this: search the Internet, for example, for hundreds of photographs of different dogs, first try to divide them into several groups in which the dogs are similar to each other. Try to determine what unites the dogs in each group. Then, using the exclusion method, select the best group in your opinion.

And now you know which dogs you like best, to understand how to build your work on breeding of the desired type, you need to analyze the pedigrees of these dogs and understand what is common between them, which makes them look alike. Most likely, you will find in these dogs either common ancestors or producers from one country. For your research to be more accurate, it is advisable to consider not 3 tribes of ancestors, but try to find more distant relatives, the possibilities of the Internet in many cases allow this to be done. If your searches and attempts to understand were successful, you can begin to draw up a breeding program or plan. It is not enough just to decide to bind your bitch with the producer of the desired type and blood, you still need to think with whom to bind future puppies in the future. Of course, interesting knits are made primarily "for yourself", i.e. it means that you will keep a bitch from the received litter in order to get even more interesting puppies from her in the future. I understand that the housing conditions do not allow the maintenance of a large number of dogs, on which you can achieve a faster and better result. But if you are passionate about the breeding process, then you can use the experience of many countries where dogs are sold on the terms of either co-ownership or rental. Of course, this method of selling puppies deprives you of a certain amount of money, but gives you, as a breeder, the opportunity to work, realize your ideas, achieve your goal.

The selection of the manufacturer for the mating of females obtained from the first litter should be no less thorough. It is necessary to take into account the shortcomings that puppies from the first litter have, and try to get rid of them in the next generation. When selecting a manufacturer, it is necessary to take into account not only his exterior and his pedigree, but also try to find as many of his children as possible from different combinations, in order to understand what advantages and disadvantages he gives to children, whether he can correct the defects of your girl, and if you don’t lose her best qualities. So, step by step, you will receive puppies that will increasingly meet your dreams of a dog of the high exterior quality of your breeding.

This approach to breeding, I call the accumulation of blood. After 3-4 generations of correct work with the breed, you will be able to have very high quality dogs of your own breed, which will be recognizable in the ring among other dogs. Even if you started with a bitch who was not very high-quality in terms of exterior and blood, then you almost removed unwanted blood and flaws from her pedigree. But one should not forget about all its shortcomings in its future work. The main thing is that you know them and will be able to avoid their return with proper planning of bindings, the correct selection of the manufacturer.

A faster way to breed is to buy a great bitch with the same great blood, i.e. most of the work has already been done, and your task will not be to miss what has already been achieved and to increase it. Particular attention should be paid to the maternal line, if the maternal line is based on linear breeding, then such a breeder can be tied with almost any dog, it is these bitches that are good for crossing, its type is difficult to spoil, but the rush of new blood will give you great opportunities, with such mating easier to fix flaws. From such a magnificent bitch it is possible to use the best male from the successful litter received in his further work with the breed.

But the children received must be taken back to the “line”. On such a bitch you can build your own line, i.e. family. Linear breeding is the key to success. It is impossible to get a good stable livestock at a constant cross, i.e. mating with inbred males. There are practically no good manufacturers from such bindings. The quality of puppies in such litters is completely unpredictable. But even if you got good puppies, then their further breeding is very problematic. And if the female can be used in breeding, competently selecting partners, then the males will be in the same situation, i.e. they need to select a bough to get quality puppies. This approach is fundamentally wrong, because a stud dog, by definition, should be an “improver”.

There are several principles for breeding:

1. Having a bitch of not the best blood and not the best exterior, with the right selection of producers in several generations, you can get a bitch who will become the founder of your own line (family).

2. Carefully study the pedigree of your own bitch, literally each of the 32 dogs present in the pedigree, and if you can, and more distant ancestors, all their strengths and weaknesses, try to talk with the breeders or owners of these possibly already gone dogs. Highlight dogs of interest to you that you can rely on when planning future work with your bitch.

3. Attend as many large shows as possible, especially mono-breeds, and study the possible relatives of your dog and prospective male. Note in the catalog (do not rely on your memory) that you were especially struck by the positive and negative traits.

4. Try to find out more not only about the exterior of the dogs you are interested in, but also about their health, about the possible carriage of genetic problems inherent in the breed.

5. A valuable producer is that producer with a strong maternal line obtained by linear breeding, this applies to both males and females.

6. Not always a titled male is a good producer, it is much more important to know what is behind it, and not what it is.

7. The quality of the pedigree dog is determined by the quality of its offspring, and the most accurate result will be when determining the percentage of successful puppies from the total number of puppies produced by it.

8. In addition to the exterior and blood, great attention should be paid to the temperament of the manufacturer. It is no secret that some males very steadily give children an outbred temperament - vicious, hysterical or cowardly.

9. Another item necessary for choosing a male for mating is having the right movements. Correct movements indicate correct dog anatomy. And the correct anatomy is directly related to the dog’s health.

10. Color when selecting a manufacturer is the last item to which you should pay attention. Chasing fashion or big money, focusing only on color, many breeders lose their accumulated, lose the type and quality of puppies.

But be prepared for the fact that you will not miss the literature published by breed. As soon as you acquire even a small suitcase of knowledge, you will realize that there is very little available literature, that books and brochures that exist by breed almost do not carry any unique information about our breed, they are written about everything and about nothing at the same time. So you will collect knowledge literally bit by bit from completely different sources. Happiness, if you meet a competent pedigree on the way, who will share his knowledge with you. Well, you have to be prepared for searches on the Internet of foreign literature, perhaps deal with translations, or, if you're lucky, use strangers.

You probably noticed that I did not touch on the science of genetics, did not use special terms. I tried to explain the principles of breeding "on the fingers", without detracting from the importance of knowledge of genetics. But I know many cases when a breeder, possessing a powerful theoretical base, could not use it correctly in practice. And at the same time, there are breeders who come to the need to study this complex science, already having extensive and successful experience in breeding, building their breeding program on intuition and understanding the problems of the breed.

If you are not afraid of upcoming difficulties and possible disappointments, if you are ready to sacrifice your time, strength and resources to achieve your goal in breeding - go for it. Because only the accumulated experience and the knowledge gained in practice will lead you to the desired goal. You can “sit” in the breed for 20 years or have “crusts” about special education, but you still don’t understand what’s what, and you can come up with remarkable generations for several generations with an inquiring mind and great desire.

We are always happy to communicate with visitors to our nursery. Stay tuned for news on the site, puppies will soon be born.

English Bulldog (breeding)

Bitch english bulldog before delivery

The first estrus. Usually it happens in 7-10 months. A month before estrus, the bitch becomes less obedient, playful, sometimes eats worse. The tear begins with the first dark drop from the loop, the loop becomes edematous, increases in size. From the first estrus, keep a diary (when it started to flow, on which day it showed special attention to males, how many days the estrus continued, how the period after estrus passed). Believe me, the breeder needs this information and if you do not write it down, it will be forgotten. During estrus, to prevent carpets and sofas from getting dirty, you can put on panties on the dog. Usually a strong hunt lasts from 9 to 15 days, when the bitch herself tries to attract the attention of the dog, sometimes the bitch in the hunt from 7 to 17 days. Try not to catch a girl during estrus, you need to walk less, mainly in order to make the necessary toilet. In late autumn and winter, wear a combi-sun over it. After estrus (after two months), there may be a false pregnancy: the nipples may increase, the abdomen will slightly round, the dog begins to build its "nest" and wear toys there. Special measures in this case should not be taken. After a few days, the dog will forget that she was “pregnant” and again become cheerful and playful. If the nipples have increased greatly and the concern of the bitch is significant, try to distract her with games, walks and reduce the amount of feed given.

According to the provisions of the RKF, the English bulldog bitches can be used in breeding after 1.8 months, usually this is the 3rd estrus, according to the previous 2 you already have an idea of its cycle. A month or 2 weeks before estrus, be sure to drive off the worms. You must visit the exhibition and get an estimate. (Without this, binding will not be valid). With the club's experienced dog handler, discuss the quality of the proposed mating dog. It is customary to carry a female to males for mating. The mating can be easy or, if the bitch is spoiled, spiteful, it’s difficult - then she is “knitted in the veil” (sorry, this is from our slang), so I recommend using the services of an experienced instructor. The bulldog, like any other dog, mates "in the castle", that is, the bitch retains the male dog for 15-20 minutes with the muscles of the perineum. When breeding, watch out for the female’s breathing, the color of her tongue (it should not be bluish). Usually there are two knits: the first and control, usually carried out every other day.

In the first month after mating, feeding and walking are as usual. From the second month it is necessary to introduce mineral supplements into the diet, where there is a lot of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamins. There is a special feed for pregnant bitches, but this is individual. Pregnancy becomes noticeable after 5 weeks: the nipples enlarge and swell, light discharge from the loop appears, the stomach is rounded. The bitch during this period walks less, sleeps more, so if your pet does not want to walk, do not drag her by force, she herself feels her needs and knows how much to walk and eat. The movement of puppies, especially pronounced around the thigh, in the lower abdomen, can be felt 7-10 days before birth. From the loop, the discharge intensifies. After 57 days, it is advisable to measure the temperature in the anus (the usual temperature is 39-39.5, but jumps from 37.5 to 39 begin before childbirth). It is necessary to measure in the morning before a walk and in the evening before bedtime. And continue to keep a diary - this is sure to come in handy in the future if you are seriously planning to breed English bulldogs. A week before giving birth, call your veterinarian to resolve the issue: childbirth or cesarean section - it will depend on the anatomical structure of the pelvic bones of the bitch, her labor and many more reasons.

But the temperature dropped to 37, the bitch was restless, often breathing shallowly, digging in her cooked arena, she was shaking a little - chills. Urgently call a veterinarian, in this case you need to have several veterinarian phones so that the dog receives timely monitoring and assistance. If the birth goes well, then a few small, tidy, wonderful babies will replenish the glorious breed of English bulldogs.

Bitch English Bulldog (childbirth)

So, the most crucial moment has come in the life of your pet. There was a popular belief that bitches of an English bulldog give birth only through a cesarean section, but this is not always the case. Already when mating, an experienced instructor, having examined the pelvic bones of your dog, can give significant recommendations on the upcoming birth. If the bitch is athletic, properly grown, her food is balanced, she does not have excess weight, then she gives birth, as a rule, herself. But it must be remembered that the heads of bulldog puppies are round, almost spherical, and give birth to their female bitch with much greater difficulties than female dogs with narrow and long snouts. Therefore, it is better if the bitch of an English bulldog gives birth in the presence of an experienced veterinarian who will help the bitch with childbirth, and if necessary, she will have a cesarean section. In my nursery, these problems have been resolved through cooperation with experienced veterinarians. But if the owner lives in the province, something needs to be understood.

If a bitch gives birth herself, then it is necessary to monitor her labor. First, the cervix opens. Contraction of the uterus is accompanied by intermittent breathing of the dog, anxiety is noted in the behavior: the bitch walks, digs its paws. But then attempts are added, the abdominal muscles begin to contract, the bitch begins to push, outwardly it resembles an attempt to urinate or defecate. Help her, talk to her, calm her down. It is advisable that by this time everything necessary has already been prepared: a lot of linen napkins, you can also use rags from old bedding, towels. Prepare warm water bottles (2-3 pieces) - 40 - 50 °, a basin or basket, on the bottom of which hot water bottles will be placed, and on top - a towel or a large diaper - you will put puppies there after birth (therefore, make sure that there was no excessively hot reamer).

So, the bitch is pushing very hard, a hill appears over the loop - this is a puppy. A few attempts and a head appears. Take a clean napkin and quietly, with the next attempt, drag your head down. So he appeared all. Rather, tear up the amniotic fluid, suck out the mucus from the nose and mouth with a rubber bulb and begin to rub the entire puppy vigorously so that it screams violently. After the puppy starts screaming, rub it for a few minutes, and then let it lick the bitch and put the puppy to her nipple - this stimulates labor. The afterbirth can go immediately after the puppy, or maybe later: be sure to count the number of puppies and afterbirths.

At a caesarean section, the presence of an experienced veterinarian is desirable: the dosage of anesthesia is difficult, the bitch gets out of the state of anesthesia, in addition, you need to show the owner how to properly apply puppies to the nipples of the bitch, cull if there is a pembrake in the litter (rarely, one of the pathologies is found “cleft palate” is a bifurcation of the upper palate: such a puppy will not be able to suck normally, although, as a rule, they are very active). It is advisable to bandage the umbilical cord, take a strong thread, cut 10 cm each and lower it into alcohol, make a loop, put it on the umbilical cord and, without grabbing the skin, tie 2-3 knots. If, according to the state of the bitch, you assumed that the birth was over, then feel the bitch’s stomach - are there any more puppies there, and if there is (you will feel them, they are like little “cubs”), and the bitch will not bother anymore, do another 0.2 ml of oxytocin or pituitrin, this should help.

All puppies were born, all the afterbirths left. Drink the bitch with warm tea with honey, give a piece of chocolate, attach all the puppies to her nipples and cover her back with a rug. Let him rest. After an hour, take to the toilet. If you don’t want to go, bring one puppy to the door. If it was a cesarean section, watch for stools, urination, and always a suture. Normally, the seam should be dry and heal quickly. On day 10-12, external sutures are removed. Within 5-7 days after abdominal surgery, antibiotics must be injected and continue to give calcium and vitamins. During the first 3 days, hold the bitch on cereals and lactic acid products (biokefir, cottage cheese, unsweetened yogurt). From 3-5 days you can add boiled meat. And from day 7, the usual food. If the bitch and puppies have weak stools, it is recommended to give bactrimsuptil (1-2 drops for puppies and the rest from the bubble to the bitch). The colloidal silver preparation developed by the St. Petersburg Academy of Medical Sciences has proven itself very well. The drug is taken both internally (1 teaspoon per 0.5 liters of water) to relieve intoxication of pregnancy, from the side effects of anesthesia, and for external treatment of the surgical suture. The mineral supplement should be given until the period when the bitch feeds the puppies.

Bitch in the postpartum period, puppy up to 1.5 months

So, small bulldogs appeared in the house - this is a very responsible period in your and their life. After giving birth, the bitch feeds puppies with colostrum - a thick and very nutritious milk, the supply of which is small (enough for 2-3 days). Apply puppies every 2 hours to the nipples of bitches, the weakest to the mildest nipples. Massage the nipple with gentle movements, squeeze a drop of milk on the puppy's nose - let it smell milk. Insert the papilla into the mouth of the puppy, grabbing the nasal area as well. Normally, the puppy sucks, making the tongue a tube, and does not smack. Make him suck, not smack. When all the puppies are full, let the bitch lick each of them. Puppies themselves do not completely cope with the emptying of the bladder and intestines - the mother helps them in this. There are bitches, especially from primiparas, who do not want to do this. If your one, try to talk her into it. Make sure that the bitch does not show aggression, this sometimes happens after cesarean section: there was an artificial termination of pregnancy, the natural mechanism is broken, anesthesia is side-effect. With careful attention to the dog, a single case of aggression will pass without consequences.

On day 2-3, colostrum changes to milk, while in the bitch rapid breathing is observed, the udder is poured. Make sure that the puppies suck out the milk completely and that the mammary glands do not harden - this is simply necessary in the early days, otherwise there is a risk of getting mastopathy, and cicatricial changes in the nipple area can create great difficulties for further feeding.

Puppies should be applied to the nipples every 3 hours. During feeding, give the bitch a lot of drink, namely during feeding, when the milk is strongly separated. If the litter is large, more than 4 puppies - first feed 3-4 on one side, then the rest on the other, turning the female over over the back. Try to immediately distinguish one "team" of editors from another - by sex or color. How puppies eat up can be determined only by weight, so keep a diary and note the weight. each puppy daily until 10 days. At 10 days, weight should double from birth, at 15 days, triple. On day 14, drive off the worms for the first time, it is better with a child pyrantel, strictly calculating the dose, at 21-23 days, the second time with drontal plus, on days 35-36 run the worms a third time, again with drontal plus. Give each puppy a teaspoon of boiled water with the drug. Next time we give anthelmintic before vaccination.

Bitch continue to give a mineral supplement with vitamins. Until the 3rd day, it is better not to feed meat (cereals, milk-milk diet are good. From the 3rd day you can add boiled meat, from 5-7 days the usual food. If ^ weak stool after childbirth (surgery), add lactobacilli to the bitch and puppies (1-2 drops each in the mouth before each feeding.) On days 10-12, the puppies begin to open their eyes, on the 14-15th day the ear canal opens, thermoregulation starts on the 10th day, so make sure the room is warm but it’s not stuffy. We begin to feed up as we gain weight, with ready-made feeds, milk A-1, then we eat porridge A- from 2 weeks 2. Usually, with good care, puppies weigh 1.5 to 4 kg at 1.5 months (at the time of activation), they eat on their own, walk well, have fun, play a lot, and feed in a flat bowl (like a frying pan) should be standing all the time, bulldog He knows how much to eat. Eat porridge, bring the puppies to the nipples of the bitch - let them drink it. If by that time the bitch has no milk, give the puppies a bio-ether or non-sweet bio-yogurt. Puppies do not drink water for up to 1 month. During feeding, the bitch sometimes loses weight, but if she is properly fed, then not by much. Sometimes it sheds a little - strengthen the calcium supplement.

Puppy - from 1.5 months. up to 1 year

Typically, a puppy finds its owner between the ages of 1.5 to 3 months.

However, before this historical meeting, it makes sense for the future owner to look at the producers - the mom and dad of the baby, while it is advisable not to be limited to photos. The best option for such an inspection is on a walk, where it is more convenient to observe movements. The bulldog does not show aggression to strangers, so if it is found in one of the parents, this is alarming - is everything all right with the nervous system?

If getting to know your puppy's parents does not raise your questions, it is time for a visit to the breeder. A good breeder in the house is always clean. There are no unpleasant odors, puppies are well-groomed, they constantly have food, fresh water or kefir. The puppy's weight is 1.5 months. must be at least 3-3.5 kg. Puppy eyes should be clean, shiny coat. The kid should be active, run well, jump. At this age, the puppy is very curious, takes an active interest in everything around him, is not afraid of your coming and is glad to meet you. By the way, do not forget to take off your outer clothing and wash your hands thoroughly before this meeting. High-profile titles of parents should not suggest that all puppies are their exact copy. There are no equivalent puppies in the litter. It can contain show dogs, future champions, dogs with an excellent exterior and just healthy pedigree puppies. If you do not know the breed deeply, rely on the opinion of an experienced expert dog handler or an honest breeder. Depending on what the future is for this puppy (show career or just a favorite animal), there is a rather large variation in prices. To date, the picture of our breed in Russian dog breeding has developed quite varied (delicately speaking), therefore, to paraphrase the famous saying in the form of advice to the future owner of an English bulldog, I’ll say that you are not so rich as to buy an outbred or unhealthy dog, such a purchase can cost you a hundred times more expensive, so do not skimp at the very beginning and take a thoroughbred and healthy puppy to your home.

So, you look puppies, and the breeder at the time praises his pets. You listen to him carefully, but this does not affect the attentiveness of your inspection. Even if you like puppies, don’t miss right away. See other litters. Usually I ask future owners about this so that they can compare, in the end, it's even interesting. Unfortunately, many people are too lazy to do this, even if they have to travel just to the other end of Moscow (how can I fly to England for my dogs ?!). In general, they don’t buy a good dog in a hurry. I hope you take my advice seriously and your choice will be successful.

English breeders say 50% of success depends on how the puppy is raised. Yes, they sold you a beautiful, healthy, pedigree dog, but this is a small child. Care, good nutrition, active walks and, of course, an unearthly love for this creature bring these 50% to 100% success.

When buying a puppy in our kennel, I give a brief, but containing basic necessary information, information on raising a puppy of an English bulldog: how and what to feed, when to drive off worms, vaccinations, etc. We immediately attach the owners of our puppies to the Eukanuba company (with which we have an agreement), from where they will receive excellent feed with free delivery. Bowls with water and food for bulldog puppies should be on the floor, not on the stand - this is necessary for the formation of a characteristic oolvdog (dogs of this breed should be low-forward). If you buy a puppy in 2-3 months, then it is already vaccinated from a good breeder. Revaccination at 7 months, after the change of all deciduous teeth, and then 1 time per year. In our nursery we use reliable, proven vaccines: Vangard, Nobivak, Hexadog.

So the puppy is growing. For those who are watching this for the first time, something may seem surprising, since the puppy grows in parts: either the head lags behind the body, then the body from the head (folds on the muzzle either disappear or appear again), each case is very individual: just as there are no similar people, so there are no similar bulldogs. Usually growth ends by 1.5 years, but the dog is fully formed by 3 years. In Anppia they say: "Before 3 years, we do not become champions." At the age of 6-12 months you should visit the first exhibition where an expert will look at your dog, make a description of it and you will receive a pedigree (when buying a puppy you will only get an exchange card, the so-called "puppy"). You must definitely become members of a club or a nursery, because exhibitions are a real celebration, sincere feelings, overwhelming emotions, communication with the same restless enthusiasts as you yourself.

Preparation for the exhibition

So, you bought a purebred beautiful English Bulldog puppy, one of the best (or best) in the litter, your breeder, not without reason, gives good forecasts for the baby's future show career, and now a lot depends on you. Nutrition, regular walks, exercise will allow your pet to fully develop its natural qualities. To this we must add the simple training elements necessary to control the dog on the exterior ring and the handling skills for the owner himself, if he is a beginner. Handler, literally, is a leader, but in fact, a person who knows how to bring and show a dog, emphasizing its best sides in statics, movements. In many countries of the world, dogs of private owners are represented by professional handlers (for a handsome fee), always athletic, elegant, chicly dressed, but who know how to focus the attention of experts and the public not on themselves, but on the dog they represent - this is professionalism. In Russia, the owner is, as a rule, also the handler (mainly for financial reasons), so from foreign experts you can often hear compliments on the exterior of the dogs and serious comments to the owners, poorly and ineptly representing them. However, many Russian dogs that have become European and World Champions were exhibited precisely by their owners, so we have a lot of good handlers (including professional ones) and several handling classes for a novice owner who wants to independently show his dog, you need to take. Call the nursery "Moonlight", we will recommend you handling specialists.

The first command that the puppy needs to master is the “next” command. Movement in the ring with a bulldog is a quick step. Already from 23 months it is necessary to accustom the dog to the rack, the execution of the "stand" command. The bulldog show in the ring has its own characteristics: a 30 ° turn to the expert, so that the chest and hind femur are visible. If the stance is unbalanced, there is a simple and convenient way for the bulldog to correct the stance: you need to take the dog under the chest and behind and, raising it slightly, gently lower it to the floor, while the bulldog usually puts its paws in the correct position. Teach your dog to maintain proper stance - this static training requires a lot of patience from both of you. When adjusting the dog’s stance in the ring, don’t be afraid for your expensive costume, feel free to get on your knee, remember, most importantly, still, show the dog, not yourself. Respect for tradition requires putting a bulldog in a chain - a golden noose, which, when shown, simply hangs on the chest, emphasizing its width.

Exposing a dog in the ring, especially for the first time, try not to worry, as excitement and insecurity are immediately transmitted to the animal. But here you are in the ring, put the dog in the rack, in the order of the catalog number. The expert examines the ring, then calls each dog individually and evaluates it, therefore it is better if the dog already gets acquainted with the ring before that.

Bring the dog to the show a little earlier or try to practice with it, “warm up” in the ring during the break of refereeing. If you and your pet stayed in the ring, receiving a rating of “excellent” (“och-choir.”, “Choir” and “satisfactory” - they leave the ring), try to remain calm, ahead of the inspection and the most exciting arrangement of the winners.

5 days before the show, it is advisable to wash the dog, brush her ears, wipe all the folds, cut the nails, and cut the tail so that it is beautiful, rounded. These days you can feed even better than usual. Do not overload with walks. And most importantly, be sure that your dog is the best, the owner’s confidence is also well conveyed to the dog. As for the English bulldog, its soul was simply created in order to resonate with the soul of the owner. So, good luck and new victories, dear like-minded people - connoisseurs of the English Bulldog breed.

Sincerely, LYUDMILA SMIRNOVA expert dog handler,
Head of the English Bulldog Kennel "Moonlight"

Description and history of the breed

The English Bulldog is a real national symbol of England, because this country is the birthplace of the breed. Little is known that initially such cute dogs were used for quite cruel purposes - to bull bulls. And, the name, by the way, came precisely from this purpose: it literally translates as “bull dog”. By the way, the folds helped in the contractions and served as protection against damage. Also, dogs were often taken to hunt wild boars, and they were reputed to be excellent hunters.

But modern bulldogs are different from their ancestors - Old English, which today no longer exists in nature. The current representatives of the breed have lost their initial qualities and in most cases are used as companions, since they do not have special skills.

The photo shows that the appearance of the English bulldogs is very funny. The dog is medium in size, but very stocky. Her height is about 40-45 centimeters, and weight - 20-30 kilograms. The body is large, not very long, the legs are widely spaced. The muzzle is large, short and flattened, the nose is approximately at eye level. The ears are small, the tail is short. A characteristic feature is the folds, which are especially numerous in the front of the body and on the head.

The English Bulldog is an incredibly calm and even somewhat phlegmatic pet. He is slow, and such a trait can be perceived as important, which gives the image a certain charisma. This dog is a loyal friend and a wonderful companion who will support always and in everything. Representatives of the breed quickly and strongly become attached to people and require attention to themselves, answering the same. The bulldog may simply not bear the change of owner, taking it as a betrayal.

The bulldog treats children very well and somehow resembles a clumsy toddler. But he will not play outdoor games, although he will with pleasure observe the young master and keep him company in quiet occupations. These dogs are also loyal to other animals, especially if they are accustomed to society from an early age.

It may seem that the English bulldog seems to be "inhibited." And he really can hesitate when executing a command or request. But this is not at all due to low intelligence: on the contrary, such dogs are very smart, so before you do something, they will think it over well to decide whether to bother. Nevertheless, bulldogs like complex tasks that make you think.

Pet care requires the following rules:

Frequent water procedures and the use of soap can lead to skin diseases. Dry your dog thoroughly after swimming. Also, dirt can be removed with a damp cloth.
  5. Claws should be trimmed as they grow back.
  6. Periodic toothbrushing is required (special bones can be used).

How and what to feed?

A dog’s nutrition should be balanced in the first place. The basis of the diet is protein (it is necessary for muscles that experience enormous loads), but it is worth giving preference to low-calorie foods. The meat should be boiled, its share in the menu is about 30-40%. Also, cereals, cottage cheese, vegetables are introduced into the diet. Natural foods can be replaced with specialized foods.

Important: do not give your pet dishes from your table, especially flour, smoked meats, sweets, fried, semi-finished products, fast food, fatty.

Parenting

Education consists of care, attention and patience. You should not be demanding, but it is appropriate to be strict and prove your authority. And become for the English bulldog not just a master, but a friend, then he will trust you and try to please you in every possible way.

Puppy selection

Puppies are even funnier than adult animals, but you should pay attention to other qualities. The dog should be agile and curious. It is better to make a purchase in a nursery, and you must be provided with documents. A pet for shows must have a pedigree.

Health problems

Unfortunately, the English bulldog does not have good health, and most of the problems are associated with physiological characteristics.

Here are some of the difficulties the owner may encounter:

  • Frequent colds. Representatives of the breed have short airways through which pathogenic organisms quickly enter the body.
  • Respiratory problems, such as tracheal hypoplasia.
  • Overheat. It is a common cause of death of English bulldogs, so hot and humid weather is very dangerous for such animals, which is associated with the peculiarities of the structure of the body and the functioning of internal organs.
  • Cardiovascular diseases. Significant weight with small body sizes - a huge load on the vessels and heart. And for this reason, dogs often suffer from shortness of breath.
  • Obesity. Bulldogs lead a calm lifestyle and love to eat, which often leads to rapid weight gain.
  • Eye diseases such as keratoconjunctivitis, third century adenoma, dystychiasis and others are also common.
  • Often there are problems with joints: dislocations, dysplasia.
  • Dermatological diseases: allergic reactions, demodicosis, interdigital dermatitis and even acne.
  • Aortic stenosis.
  • Hearing problems, up to deafness.
  • Lymphosarcoma.
  • Hard birth. The pelvis of the females is very narrow, and the puppy's head may not pass through the birth canal, so delivery in most cases involves a cesarean section.

Interesting: bulldogs can snore, drool or suffer flatulence, but all this is quite normal and does not require help.

Become a friend for the bulldog, and he will answer you with love!
