How to teach a child to draw?

The question “How to teach children how to draw a person?” Perplexes many adults: not everyone can realistically convey proportions and portrait similarities, and even more so, explain the stages of drawing a human figure to a child. We will show simple schemes and give recommendations on how to draw a person in stages - even an adult child will cope.

Most adults, not professionally engaged in artistic activities, stopped in their development at the “cephalopods” stage. But this is not a reason to give a “turn from the gate” to a kid with a pencil who wants to know this world and learn everything.

Drawing, the child fantasizes, develops his abilities, trains visual memory. Of course, to draw a person is much more difficult than a tree or a hedgehog, but even the most difficult thing can be divided into simple stages so that it does not seem so terrible and impossible. Learning together!

How to teach a child 3-4 years to draw a person

A child of 3-4 years old can be explained by the principle of drawing a human figure using an example of a simple scheme: head, torso, arms and legs, necessarily the neck, hands and feet.

Let it be practiced to draw boys and girls this way. Here it is important, first of all, not so much the similarity as the working out of a sense of proportion, the presence of all the “components”.

Then you can try to draw the little men in motion. To clearly show the child how our arms and legs are bent when walking, jumping, turning, etc., demonstrate all these movements in front of the mirror.

It is convenient to make a wire frame and bend it in different directions.

Let this wire model be your guide when teaching your child how to draw a person in motion.

It is useful to make quick sketchy drawings. We set the wire model to the desired position - immediately drew it. Later you explain to the child how to “dress” the little men. Now it’s more important to understand how the position of the arms and legs changes with one or another movement.

So that little artists will not be distracted from the main thing - the transfer of movement in the drawing - offer to draw a moving person using a silhouette. To make it easier, make a cardboard model with moving elements.

Another tip for those who want to teach a child to draw a person well: sculpt! Yes, yes, it’s easier for the child to perceive proportions in volume, he will quickly understand how to correctly. If he learns to mold a person well and quickly, drawing it is easy for him - verified.

Techniques and methods of drawing

The first interest in art in children appears quite early. At 2-3 years old, kids begin to actively use improvised tools to create paintings. During this period, it is important for parents to develop a child’s interest in drawing. This provides several advantages:

· The baby develops fine motor skills of the hands,

· Learns to express his thoughts, observations, experiences,

· Spills out accumulated resentment, negativity, fears,

· Learns new colors, paints, textures,

· Develops imagination and quick wit.

You can choose a specific teaching methodology at the art school, using the advice of teachers, or in a network where the achievements of foreign and domestic specialists are presented. It is important to take into account the capabilities, interests and desires of a son or daughter, rather than fashion trends and trends.

How to teach a child to draw with pencil and paints?

Before you start classes, you need to prepare a place and accessories for work.

When choosing pencils, stop at not very small ones, so that it is convenient for the child to hold them in his hand. It is preferable for babies to purchase thickened trihedral pencils (the thumb, index and middle fingers are naturally located on the three faces), older children can already be offered thin hexagons.

As for color, it is better to take a set of 12 primary colors - this will be enough for simple tasks and for real masterpieces.

Many stores offer double-sided sharpening pencils. It is better to refuse this option - it is difficult for young children to navigate in colors, and for kids it is completely unsafe.

When buying pencils in opaque boxes, do not forget to purchase a pencil case, otherwise they can be easily lost and broken. It is not worth saving on educational supplies, they must be of high quality and reliable.

If you opted for paints for creativity, then also monitor their quality, shelf life and the presence of harmful substances in the composition. Preschoolers are most often recommended to use gouache, which has a dense texture, and at the same time is inexpensive and safe to use. In addition, it can be easily washed off from any surfaces or hands of a young artist.

Popular and fashionable among modern parents, finger paints are perfect for the smallest artists, as they develop motor skills and imagination.

When choosing finger paints, pay attention to their composition: in addition to food colors, water and salt, there should not be any impurities.

A child out of curiosity may decide to taste the colors, so you must be sure that they are absolutely safe for the baby.

Do not strive to acquire a large number of flowers - for the first time a package of 4 colors will be enough. And so that the child does not draw all the wallpaper and furniture, organize a space for creativity and buy a paper.

Before starting work, you should tell the kid about the secrets of this type of art, offer to try each type of tool and choose for yourself what you like.

We divide the sheet into three parts: head (small oval), trunk (rectangle) and legs. Schematically, we got a little man. We add hands and ears to him, work on the details of the portrait and get a pretty good image. Working on the face of the painted doll, we tell the child about the proportions and arrangement of each detail, thus studying the structure of our body.

How to teach a kid to draw a house?

The ability to portray a house is very important for a small person. Psychologists say that such a structure symbolizes protection, safety and family comfort in the understanding of the baby.

First tell us what figures the house consists of, what sizes each part has and where they are. Then proceed to the phased image in the cells to demonstrate all the nuances of the picture. First, step by step, disassemble the tree into its component parts: crown, branches, trunk. Think about what geometric shape each object looks like (rose, mushroom, chamomile or bushes) and transfer your observations to a piece of paper. The tree trunk, for example, is a long rectangle, the branches are dashes in different directions, and in the form of a cloud around them there will be foliage. Passion for vehicles is interesting for both girls and boys, so you should learn how to draw cars, planes and ships.

In the beginning, as usual, we will figure out the proportions: circles, triangles and squares. If we need a truck, then we draw a cabin in the form of a square.

· A schematic image of branches - triangles that decrease in size to the top,

· We add toys, jewelry and cones in such quantity and form as imagination allows us.

A beautiful snowflake, bunny or Santa Claus can complement the winter landscape.

How to teach a child to draw animals?

The love of children for animals is known to everyone. It will not surprise anyone if the baby asks you to draw a bunny, fox, bear, dog, cat, fish, horse, bird, elephant or cow.

Do not be afraid of such a request, because transferring these animals to a piece of paper is not at all difficult, the main thing is to understand the basic principles of the image of living creatures. Each drawing is based on an understanding of the proportions of the body and the main figures that demonstrate them.

For example, you can draw a kitten with the help of several ovals of different sizes located next to each other: the head is a medium-sized figure, near which there is a larger oval - the body. Four ovals of small size are paws, and a long and thin oval is the tail. The ears, nose, mustache and eye of a child can be depicted at their discretion, allowing a riot of fantasy. This also applies to the color of the animal - do not put any framework and restrictions, allow the child to express himself on paper, drawing domestic and wild animals (tiger, frog, elephant, butterfly or dinosaurs).

How to teach a child to draw a still life?

To draw a still life is a fairly simple task, when compared with the previous ones. An apple or a pear, grapes or a bouquet of flowers can be easily transferred to the album if you remember the basic rules of a young artist: size, proportion, shape and a little imagination. At the beginning of study, you should not criticize the baby if the plum looks more like a bird or a vase resembles a bowl of soup.

The main thing is that the young painter is trying to understand and convey all the beauty of the world in an accessible form. Technique and artistic techniques will appear a little later, now you just need to admire children's works, praise and be proud of your child.

How to teach a child 5-6 years old to draw a person: proportions

Teach your child to see the invisible. Before you draw a dressed figure, you need to outline the frame, understand the position of the arms and legs, the direction and rotation of the body relative to the head, etc. Use the schemes, extra lines from the picture can always be removed with an eraser.

When a child learns to think precisely in diagrams, he will have no difficulties drawing a human figure.

Preschoolers of 5-6 years old can safely explain how the figure of an adult differs from the figure of a child. The module with which we “measure” the figure is the head. Much depends on how many times the head "fits" in the scheme of constructing a human figure.

Show a photograph of a child standing next to an adult. Offer to measure (with a ruler, a strip of paper, etc.) how many times the child’s head "fits" in his entire figure. Do the same with an adult figure. The child himself will conclude that children have a larger head (relative to the proportions of the whole body).

In adults, the head "fits" 7-8 times (ideally). If you take this into account when drawing a person, the figure will come out proportional, similar.

It is enough to draw a simple outline several times to draw fat and thin people, men, women and children in the future.

Male and female figures are different. In the diagram, these differences are easily shown by geometric figures. Men have broad shoulders, women have hips.

Very soon, your child will learn the basics of drawing a person and will be able to portray the whole family!

1. Do not be afraid of a white sheet

There is a development of knowledge, but there is a miracle of creativity - when you create something from scratch. Children, of course, don’t think about it the way we adults do, it’s just an exciting process for them. And it is important for parents to keep the ability of children not to be afraid of a clean slate. The ability to start, create new projects and not be afraid of new tasks will come in handy in any area of life.

2. Giving the child paints (and freedom)

When a child develops the ability to hold objects in his hand, you can already offer to draw. Someone quickly gets a taste and begins to draw constantly. Someone is cautious at first. There are both girls and boys who are afraid to get dirty. One with pleasure will climb into the paint as a whole, the whole will be smeared. And the other will be wary of looking at this jar.

It is necessary to propose different materials, in no case to evaluate the result of the work and not to set specific tasks: "Now we will draw strawberries." Apparently, I myself am a very freedom-loving person by nature, it seems to me that in this area it is certainly necessary to give maximum freedom and not limit it. Any manifestations of imagination should be encouraged.

3. Do not learn to draw "correctly"

In our studio, very understanding parents were selected. Rarely there are those who want at once some kind of realistic school, results, techniques and best practices. But it happens. This sounds especially strange when they bring four to six year old preschool children and say: "Teach my child to paint beautifully." I'm starting to figure out what is “beautiful.” What is hanging on our walls is beautiful? "Well, yes, but ...". Gradually I understand that in their minds it is beautiful - it is realistic. Well, realistic - this is not our case, because it is not by age and there is absolutely no reason.

There are children who want specifics. Let's draw an apple. Let them draw. One girl, in my opinion, for a year, if not more, called everything she painted, with one simple word: “Dog”. She always painted dogs. We offered her: look, Sonia, we have a theme today - medieval knights, come on, maybe a castle? No, a dog. Well, we understood - that means a person should work out this topic. A dog is like a dog. Now this Sonya gives out masterpieces. And this is not a dog at all.

Someone is completely satisfied with their abstractions as such, someone endows these abstractions with meanings and says that this is a car, and this is a mountain, and the car will go there now, and there is a tunnel. Therefore, it is important to feel the child well in order to understand what the result means for the child.

4. Do not compare with one sample (“I won’t succeed”)

If you compare the “correct” apple you draw with the child’s apple, he always sees the difference. Therefore, in the classroom, we show children many different artists.

They often worry: "I will not succeed like someone else." You need to understand that everyone has a different sensitivity, and take this into account when showing children other people's work.

5. Discuss the drawn

It is important not to evaluate the child’s drawing, but to discuss the content. This is a great plane to talk to. The child is grateful when someone is interested in: what is actually happening there? And he says that this is an apple, a worm lives in it, and now it will crawl out of here.

Well done is a value judgment. A kind of checkmark: "Ah, what a doodle, oh, well done!" Praised, the child is satisfied, but the dialogue did not happen. But he brought something to show and share something, because at this age (we are talking about preschoolers and elementary school students) these pictures are his world. And it is important for him that you join there, look, wander, live, find yourself there.

6. Stopped drawing? Not scary

Not all children draw. For some, drawing may just be a developmental stage. There are girls who draw princesses. They will draw a little - and that’s all over. Neither before nor after they are interested in drawing. There is nothing to worry about. They manifest themselves in another. These girls can, for example, dance perfectly. They just have a different way of knowing the world. And this is normal.

Often, children's painting is mistaken for artistic talent. Then the desire to draw passes, and the parents are upset. But this is life: it means that this activity was needed at this stage of development. Further, the child will learn new ways of self-expression, knowledge of the world, and they will be different, more logical. Maybe the drawing will return - or maybe not.

7. Do not rush to art school

They take to the art school from about 11 years old, and this is the right age. Already there is a motivation to strive for something, the children want to compete: who is better at it, who is more realistic in drawing, shading the cube in a special way. This is the age when children are interested, they can work. And until age 11, the most important thing is to preserve the inner freedom of the child, the lack of patterns and fears.

When the age of achievement comes, he puts everything in its place. Then the person already wants to learn mastery. And just closer to adolescence it becomes clear whether the child has something more than an immediate children's love of drawing. Someone experienced looks and notices a vision, a good hand, a sense of composition or color. And if such a child wants to continue drawing, he is making progress.

How to teach a child to hold a pencil and do hatching?

If you decide to do drawing with your baby, remember that in the first years of life, a little man actively learns and discovers the world around him. And drawing for him is also a kind of game, an experiment, a way of translating his childhood fantasies.

After all, you can play not only with cubes and dolls. You can invent and draw interesting stories on paper, make paper clothes, bed and furniture for the same paper dolls, draw road maps for toy travels, etc.

Show your child as many ways of drawing as possible, and soon you will notice the manifestations of his own imagination.

What do drawing lessons give the child?

  • Your baby will develop fine motor skills and hand coordination, and this is directly related to the development of intelligence. So your child will learn to reason logically, he will have a good memory, attention and coherent speech.
  • Drawing prepares a child's hand for writing.
  • Playing in drawing, a little artist will learn to distinguish between colors and shades, size and number of objects.
  • Not knowing how to express your feelings in words, your baby will be able to express them in creativity. Knowing this, psychologists successfully help children to get rid of fears by drawing.

When to start drawing classes?

Interest in drawing appears in children very early. They see older children and adults draw and write, and try to imitate them. You can stimulate this interest and not wait when the child himself asks you for pencils or paints, but specifically invite him to draw.

First, let him just watch how you draw. After all, his pens are still quite weak to hold a brush or pencil. From about 4 months, you can offer your child to paint with fingers and palms. And when the pens get stronger, that is, closer to the second year of life, offer him a brush first, then pencils and felt-tip pens.

Do not rush from the very first lessons to teach your child to draw. Let him just draw funny scribbles on paper. This is the first stage of drawing that your kid goes through. Experts call him stage of marania. Until about 2 years old, your little artist will play with a pencil, simply striking them on paper and not creating specific images.

At this stage of child development, you can teach your baby:

  • correctly hold a pencil, felt-tip pen, etc.
  • draw points, lines, circles, ovals,
  • paint over shapes.

How to teach a child to hold a pencil correctly?

The correct, three-finger grip needs to be formed gradually. And you can start long before the baby begins to draw with a pencil.

First, the child learns to take objects with the thumb and forefinger. This skill is formed approximately in Help his special games.

  • With bulk items - mosaic, small pebbles, buttons, beads. They can be simply sorted out, or they can be laid out with two fingers across the containers.
  • With clothespins. Cut out various shapes from the cardboard (for example, a Christmas tree, a hedgehog, the sun, etc.) and invite the baby to attach clothespins to them. Clothespins can also be hooked on the rim of the bucket, on top of each other and, of course, on clothes and rope.
  • With tweezers. Teach your child to transfer small toys, pieces of foam rubber, pasta from tweezers from one container to another.

When small fingers will easily do these manipulations, begin to form a three-finger grip. To do this, use the following tips:

  • Insert your pencil regularly in your fingers regularly. But do not do it too annoyingly, otherwise the baby will become uninteresting to draw.
  • If you give a small piece of pencil or chalk, then the child simply will not be able to hold it with his fist and take it exactly as you need to hold a pencil or pen with three fingers.
  • Buy a special triangular rubber nozzle for pencils and brushes or thick pencils with a triangular section. It’s hard for kids to hold round pencils.
  • After 3 years, you can show the baby the next trick. Put the pencil point down on the table, hold it with your left hand. Put three fingers of your right hand in a pinch and place them on the top of the pencil. Now slowly drop a pinch down the pencil. When the fingers are almost at the stylus, they will certainly take the correct position.

Choose pencils and felt-tip pens

So, short and trihedral pencils will teach the baby to hold them correctly.

In addition, the first pencils for drawing should be very soft, so that without strong pressure to leave a mark on paper. It can be wax and plastic pencils, water-based pencils. They are easily sharpened with ordinary sharpeners, leaving soft and even strokes, the drawings turn out saturated and bright. Such pencils do not get dirty hands, easily wash off clothes, have no smell.

And of course, your baby can easily draw with felt-tip pens. There are harmless felt-tip pens with food-based inks on sale right now. Felt pens are also sold, which are easily washed off hands and clothes.

Where to start drawing?

First show the baby how to properly use the new item. Draw something simple and understandable to the baby - lines, simple figures, a house, a cloud, the sun. After that, give the child a pencil and be sure to praise him if he draws at least a couple of strokes or dots.

Take the baby’s pen in your hand and slowly draw with it first straight and wavy lines, circles, ovals, then gradually complicate the image. So you will help your child to master the basic movements faster, use his muscle memory.

The lesson will be interesting and informative if you read poetry or sing a song and at the same time draw what you say or sing about. The more songs, poems, fairy tales, jokes you know, the easier it will be for you to come up with a plot plot.

Do not forget about Suteev's fairy tales "Mouse and Pencil", "Rooster and Paints", "Capricious Cat". These fascinating fairy tales in pictures are loved by all kids, without exception. In addition, they show in steps how to draw, for example, a cat.

Learning to draw lines

So that the kid could draw what he intended, he just needs to learn how to draw a variety of lines with a pencil - straight, wavy, close them in a circle, oval, etc. And if we, adults, do not need to draw any line with a pencil, then this is a real job for the baby. The child has not yet learned to control the movements of the hand and it is still difficult for him to handle writing instruments.

Therefore, one of the first tricks you can teach a young artist is to draw lines. To do this, invite him to play the following games.

"Connectors." This game not only provides an opportunity to practice drawing straight lines on paper, but also develops logical thinking. Prepare for it in advance. Draw or stick images on a piece of paper and invite the child to connect them with lines, following a certain logic. You can give your baby the following tasks:

  • Connect the lines of identical butterflies (cars, flowers, berries.).
  • Connect lines of cookies of the same shape.
  • Connect the fruit lines with a plate.
  • Combine objects of the same color.

Gradually, you can complicate the task.

"Draw a picture." Invite the child to complete the missing details. First, let it be just straight lines, for example:

  • mushroom legs
  • umbrella handles,
  • tree trunks,
  • rays of the sun, etc.

Let the baby connect the heads of the flowers with a vase, balls with the hand of a little man.

Draw a cloud and rain with the child. Draw the earth, and let the little one draw grass.

Stencils. Teach your kid to draw with a stencil. Now in stores a wide selection of stencils on various topics is presented - animals, vegetables, fruits, sea inhabitants, etc. As stencils, you can also use the faces of the cube-sorter.

This lesson trains muscle memory. Tracing the stencils, the kid learns to draw closed lines and shapes.

"Circle the subject." Put cups, cubes, frames and inserts on a sheet of paper and circle with colored pencil. Then combine the corresponding object with the figure drawn on paper. This game teaches to outline flat shapes, as well as to correlate a planar image and its outline.

And of course, do not forget to draw around the baby's hands - this lesson gives great joy to little artists.

"Tracks." Draw paths on paper - two parallel lines. Offer the baby to first circle them with a finger, and then draw a pencil over them.

You need to circle your finger so that the kid understands the task. It also develops muscle memory. If you remember, at school, students first write letters and numbers with their hands in the air, and only after that - in a notebook.

To make the crumbs interesting, come up with a plot. For example, draw a ladybug at the beginning of the path, and a house at the end. And now, together with the child, help the ladybug get to the house. You can also help the truck reach the garage, the ship to swim to the island, and the butterfly to fly to the flower.

Learn to do hatching.

Hatching helps develop the skill of continuous writing. It is always done from left to right, just as we read and write.

"Cats and Mice." For classes you will need a toy cat. Draw houses on paper, and mice in them.

Ding ding bom, ding ding bom
There is a cat with a bells.
The mice immediately heard
They quickly ran into the hole.
Close the windows soon
You will save the mice from the cat.

Show your baby how to hide mice from a cat by shading them.

For the first lessons, draw small houses so that the child’s pen is not tired, and he is not tired of drawing. You can use other characters - bunnies and a wolf, chickens and a fox. And you can not save anyone, but just play hide and seek.

As you can see, you can teach your child the basics of drawing, even if you yourself do not know how. There are many tricks with which you can create original work, even without any ability to draw.

If the child refuses to complete your tasks, do not insist. Let the kid draw anything and whatever. After all, it is much more important to support his imagination and independence, and not to teach the technique of drawing.
